We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jana Donohoe a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jana, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Embarking on the journey of pursuing a degree in interior design was my first significant step in conquering the persistent shadow of imposter syndrome. While in school I discovered an inherent passion and capability within myself. The academic milestones became not only a testament to my growing expertise but also a powerful tool in dismantling the self-doubt. My journey however, did not end with graduation; rather, it extended into a commitment to continuous education and self-improvement. Enrolling in workshops, attending design conferences, and seeking mentorship were pivotal in refining my skills and bolstering my confidence. Putting myself out there, despite the nagging voice of doubt, became a transformative exercise. Embracing opportunities to showcase my work, collaborating with fellow designers, and engaging with the design community helped me realize that my skills were not merely a facade. Through dedication, education, and a willingness to challenge myself continuously helps me feel like a confident and accomplished professional in the world of interior design.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Hello! I’m Jana Donohoe owner and principal interior designer at Jana Donohoe Designs based in Denver Colorado and work with clients nationwide. At Jana Donohoe Designs, my passion lies in curating spaces that transcend mere aesthetics.
As the creative force behind my interior design business, I believe that our surroundings profoundly impact our overall well-being. By meticulously designing spaces to be highly functional and infused with a rich palette of colors, I aim to create environments that go above and beyond visual appeal. Studies show that our environment has a huge impact on our mood and overall well-being. I am committed to harnessing this knowledge to elevate the living experience for my clients. From vibrant accents to harmonious color schemes, every choice is made with the intention of promoting a healthier and more joyful lifestyle.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I believe these skills are pivotal for a successful and impactful journey in interior design.
Creativity and Vision: The ability to think creatively and envision how a space can be transformed is at the core of interior design. Creative thinking allows designers to conceptualize unique and innovative solutions, making spaces not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and inspiring. Having a strong vision enables designers to bring cohesion to diverse elements and create a distinctive signature style.
Communication: Effective communication is crucial in understanding clients’ needs, presenting design concepts, and collaborating with architects, contractors, and clients. Being able to articulate ideas clearly, listen actively, and adapt communication styles to different audiences helps foster a collaborative design process. Strong interpersonal skills contribute to successful partnerships, ensuring that the final design reflects the client’s vision while meeting practical requirements.
Knowledge of codes and regulations: A comprehensive understanding of building codes, regulations, and industry standards is indispensable in the field of interior design. Designers must navigate legal and safety requirements, ensuring that their creations comply with local building codes and regulations. This knowledge not only safeguards the well-being of occupants but also streamlines the design process.
Practical, hands-on experience is the best way to learn, develop and improve your interior design skills. School only teaches you so much! Real world design projects provide insights into the logistical challenges, budget considerations, and on-site problem-solving that are integral to successful design implementation. Don’t be afraid to get out there, make mistakes, learn and grow.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
The primary obstacle I am currently facing is the challenge of re-establishing my design business in a new geographic area. I was previously located in North Carolina and had a well established design and client base. Relocating across the country has meant starting over in an environment where design preferences, and market demands are significantly different from NC.
To overcome this challenge, I am implementing a multi-faceted approach. I still work with many clients in NC and have opened up to working with clients all over the U.S.
I am actively engaging with local architects, builders, real estate agents, and other professionals in the design industry. Building these connections not only expands my professional network but also provides valuable insights into the local market and opportunities for collaboration.
I am also leveraging social media to showcase my portfolio and share my design insights. My online presence allows me to reach a broader audience and convey my design style to potential clients and possible brand collaborations.
