Meet Nemo Chen

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nemo Chen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nemo below.

Nemo, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Stay curious about everything, remain vigilant, and question, continuously breaking and then verifying.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I work as a photographer and an artist focused on lens experiments, including still and moving image art, and image installations. After obtaining her bachelor’s degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, I divide my work and life between Chicago and multiple cities in China.

As a photographer, I produce fashion-related work for publications, designer brands, and influencers. Thrive in a fast-paced fashion production environment, manipulating raw campaign imagery and fulfilling all post-production requirements. As an artist, I try to use still images as my primary medium to continuously accomplish art experiments centered on the infinity and boundaries of individuals, as well as the fluidity emitted by different individuals under ever-changing circumstances. My work has been exhibited and featured at venues and international media outlets in the past few years. In 2023 spring, I started experimenting with the AIGC tool in an attempt to employ generative content as a new material to realize my artistic vision. And that’s also gonna be my next focus in 2024.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One, always prepared to fail. Two, Stick to what you love. Three, Stay sensitive. I don’t give advice but if I have to, eat well, sleep well, and don’t drink too much.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
In the past few months, I have been attempting to create short videos related to art topics. At the same time, I’ve been contemplating what form of video can capture the audience’s attention in today’s fast-paced world. How much explanation and depth are needed in discussions about art nowadays, and how to find a balance in it? I don’t have a definitive answer yet, I try to explore further through practice and learning.
