We recently connected with Samantha Dittmann Struemph and have shared our conversation below.
Samantha, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I work continually on this. Creativity for me is something that can flow easily or be extremely hard. I try to challenge myself to come up with new ideas along with learning from those around me. I have found that workshops are some of the best things. They give you a new look into things. Maybe a new lightning setup, background, props or a better way to do things. Workshops and conferences are a great way to reset your creativity and give you a boost.
I also find having a group to turn to is a great idea. I have some amazing people that I can bounce ideas off of and will help me when I am stuck. They have invited me for creative days of just doing up with something new and working on how it will work.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m Samantha Dittmann Struemph, the proud owner and photographer behind Diamond Gal Photography, specializing in capturing the beauty and strength of women through female boudoir sessions. My journey into the world of boudoir photography began with my own session for my wedding. Despite being an experienced photographer, I had never explored boudoir until then. Initially intending it as a special gift for my husband, the experience unexpectedly empowered me, revealing a newfound sense of self. Inspired by this revelation, I decided to delve into boudoir photography, officially launching my business after the birth of my daughter.
Dealing with postpartum depression after her arrival, I sought a path to rediscover myself. Diamond Gal Photography became my outlet to focus on showcasing the incredible qualities of women. The transformative impact became evident after my first session, confirming that this was my true calling. Over the past five years, I’ve had the privilege of photographing hundreds of women, unveiling unique facets of their personalities. Through this process, not only has my business flourished, but I’ve also experienced personal growth.
With each session, my passion, confidence, and self-worth have blossomed. I derive immense joy from revealing to each woman aspects of herself she may not have recognized before, fostering a mutual benefit. Beyond my professional life, I am a devoted wife and mother to two energetic children. I have an amazing and supportive family. I cherish moments spent indulging in Mexican cuisine, sipping coffee, cooking and exploring different wines. The supportive community at my gym has become a second family, and I find fulfillment in both my roles, recognizing that they contribute to my ongoing vibrancy and learning experiences.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge stand out as pivotal. First and foremost, my unwavering passion for photography has been a driving force. Through the lens, I perceive the world uniquely, finding my utmost confidence. Holding a camera empowers me, granting me boundless possibilities to explore my creativity and enhance my technical skills—a cornerstone in my personal and professional growth.
Resilience has been another crucial element. There were moments when the path seemed daunting, and the future uncertain. However, my determination, coupled with the support of my family, tribe, and especially my husband, propelled me forward. I navigated through dark times, and the commitment to finishing what I started remains unwavering. This resilience has been instrumental in overcoming challenges and propelling me towards my goals.
The third key aspect is my logical mindset. I possess a strategic understanding of how different elements come together, often foreseeing things one or two steps ahead. This foresight has been invaluable in navigating the complexities of business, family, and life. By meticulously planning ahead, I’ve been able to manage the intricate puzzle pieces of my journey, contributing significantly to both my business and personal development.
To those just starting out, I would advise a few things. First off find a tribe. A group or person that will be your cheerleading, tell you the truth and stand by you. You don’t have to walk the journey alone. Also, know when to ask for help. This is one thing I have always struggled with but the older I have gotten, the more I realize that I can’t do everything and I don’t know everything. Sometimes it is better for everyone to get help and learn from the experience.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed I try a few different things. First off, I list 5 things that I am grateful for. This helps ground me to remember that things are not that bad and life is pretty good. I then usually talk to my husband. He is one of the rocks I lean on when I need help or support. Something just talking it through helps more than any action. I then make a list of things that need to get done. I start with the most urgent and work my way through. It helps me see how much I have accomplished when I can mark things off a list as they are completed. I can also see what doesn’t need to be done right away and plan to do it later so the day isn’t so overwhelming.
