Meet Rory Odom

We were lucky to catch up with Rory Odom recently and have shared our conversation below.

Rory, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
The simple answer in my mind is my naturally curious nature. With this curiousity, I constantly find my self searching through new unfamiliar spaces to gain knowledge on things that catch my eye or that i find interesting. I think this in a round about way keeps me on new pathways and in a constant state of self evolution.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Art became a much bigger part of my everday life during a large period of recovery. After a car accident in 2015 left me paralyzed, i decided to make a complete lifestyle change. Since there was no going back to my old way of life, my thoughts went to using this an as opportunity to try and grow as an artist. That was over eight years ago, and it stuck.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Perserverance i imagine would be the biggest for me, it seems to just be a process like any other, keep trying know one cant fault you for that. Next my creativity has to be a big one, we all have genuine and unique ideas, my journey started because i wanted to share beautiful images that came to me in dreams. Pick up a pen and share yours. Lastly i would say would have is just a my overall interest and love for art. It is so much easier to really grab ahold of something if you look forward to each chance you get. With that in mind, try it all to find your niche.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I think we can all surprise ourselves anywhere that we find ourselves. If someone told me ten years ago that i would be doing interviews for art magazines, showing art in International Art Exhibitions, or have my face on the billboard in Times Square, i would have certainly thought them crazy. However i watched, i learned, i put in the hours and here we are. Pull away from the negative, go your own way.
