Meet Rob Turner

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rob Turner. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rob below.

Rob, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
Always observing, always on the lookout for something that catches my eye or piques my interest. I always feel like there’s some subtlety or nuance that can bring to light something much bigger. It’s this spark that constantly keeps my creativity alive in writing, playing, recording, performing, etc.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a musician and producer primarily writing and recording songs based out of my home cabin and studio. My band Five Star Friend has recently come out with an album titled “The Great Big Yes”. You can find it on any streaming platforms.

Our sound is a mix of rock, pop, indie and country – taking a little bit from all of those genres and stirring the pot to make our own sound. With a string of singles on the horizon, Five Star Friend is in “ready set go”-mode for the release of the second full-length album.

From clangy, jangly Fender Jag-Stangs to crisp, layered harmonies to thumping, melodic basslines to soft, mellow 12-strings to…yes, even a bit of cowbell, you’re gonna find it all in Five Star Friend’s music. From the first album recorded in a garage, to the subsequent two demo EPs and later singles, it’s got that no-nonsense, keep-it-simple approach that’s come to accompany Five Star Friend and its sound.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Patience and consistency have been important qualities that I’ve developed over the years in my music. To put it simply, I’ve never really taken a big break from playing music (mostly because I just enjoy it so much I don’t want to stop). You’re bound to get better from playing all the time, as much as possible. It’s only natural, I believe. So being patient in the process of continuing to write, play and record has paid dividends in the long-term success of me as a musician.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always looking to play with great musicians – you can only get better if you play with great players. And plus, the live sound may very likely improve with the additional right pieces. If there’s any guitar or bass players that are looking to join our current line-up, please DM email me and we’ll take it from there.
