We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Noah Lawrence-Holder a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Noah, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Like many artists, I my creativity has always felt like an innate part of me. However, I think its absence is innate as well. There are natural ebbs and flows to being an artist, and the best thing you can learn to do is to not beat yourself up when things aren’t flowing. I think of it as reaping and sowing- If you aren’t in a position to create, you can still cultivate inspiration to help you make things later.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Right now I work mostly freelance as an illustrator and animator. On the illustration side of things, I get hired to make posters, labels, editorial illustrations and lots more. My animation practice is more geared towards motion graphics. I get to make a lot of 2D images and text jump and dance around. I love what I do because I enjoy problem solving and communication. At the core of my practice, my role is usually figuring out how to relay a message with a visual metaphor. I get to be clever, I get to be creative and I am always working on something new.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think what helped me grow into the artist I am now was my hunger to draw. I loved to fill sketchbooks constantly, even if the drawings weren’t good enough to share. My sketchbooks were a place to experiment freely- a place to play without concern for the finished product. I think letting go of the idea that everything you make has to be good enough to post is really important. If you’re just starting, you shouldn’t worry about everything you make being marketable. It’s too big of an inhibitor.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always excited to work with someone new! I’d really love to be doing more art that I get to let loose on- band/ event posters, skateboard graphics, things like that. I did my first couple board graphics last year for one of my local skate shops and it was honestly a dream come true. Working with other creatives just brings a different kind of energy to a project, and really informs how the work evolves in a fun way.
