Meet Arturo Hoyos

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Arturo Hoyos. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Arturo below.

Arturo, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
There is a quote that goes “The less you respond to negative people, the more peaceful your life will become.” I do not engage with haters or individuals who spread negativity. If that is something they enjoy doing, that is great for them. However, I enjoy focusing on my work and my work only.

In sports, it is normal for competition amongst coaches/programs to be present. In fact, I believe it is a fantastic reality as it should motivate all coaches and programs to improve their craft, and, as a result, better improve the player.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
In early 2020, I was a substitute teacher and had my future job lined up to teach English in Japan. However, once the pandemic became an official global crisis, I was laid off as a substitute and lost the job that was waiting for me in Japan. That was when I turned to coaching as my source of income. What started off as training a few players here and there, has now blossomed into my own soccer academy. It was an absolute blessing in disguise.

Elite IQ Football is the only all-girl, zone one soccer academy (7v7 & 9v9 ages) in San Diego. This is one of the factors that sets me apart, but what truly sets me apart from other programs is that I am one of few who teaches universal and individual concepts with constant decision-making. I currently have 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, and 2012 groups who work with me on a weekly basis, and we compete in tournaments as well. It is amazing how quickly these players can improve when proper teaching and coaching techniques are applied.

What I am most proud of is not the championships that we have won, but rather that all of our teams share a collective identity. All Elite IQ Football teams respect the positional play approach, look to possess the ball in order to create scoring opportunities, and are brave on the ball. We avoid the typical long-ball approach that you see across countless soccer fields in this country. Elite IQ Football families believe and trust in our coaching philosophy, and that is something I am extremely proud of, and grateful for.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities/areas of knowledge that have been the most impactful (and to this day allow me to continue to improve as a coach) have been remaining open-minded, hungry for knowledge, and learning from mentors who have years of experience under their belt.

My advice to anyone embarking on a similar journey as mine, is to never believe you are all-knowing. Be humble, earn your stripes, and surround yourself with those who share a similar passion. Lastly, trust your gut. Many people will tell you to do this, that, or the other. At the end of the day, know your purpose and do what YOU believe is right.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
Great question — the ideal student (program player) is one who trusts the big picture (this includes the parents as well). The ideal student is one who comes to Elite IQ Football with the mindset to truly want to improve and raise their game to the next level, not simply to join a team, play tournaments, and win trophies. We demand our players to carry a positive attitude, give their absolute best effort, be punctual, and be brave on the field. Furthermore, the ideal student is one who understands or attempts to understand the program’s philosophy and game model. When these traits come together, the individual player’s improvement is monumental. We have been fortunate enough to witness this with a few of our most consistent players over the years.
