We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Erica Muller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Erica, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
Self discipline is interesting because it can be so fluid. But for me it comes naturally when I look at the goals I have. I know I’m the only one who can get me there and because of that, I just know discipline is part of the equation. For me, the most important part of self discipline is recognizing that it will look different every day. You have to try different approaches, be ready to pivot and stay on your toes, but at the same time take a day off, relax, enjoy life. I feel like I am often a walking dichotomy but usually those things are opposite sides of the same coin.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I love story telling. And I think story telling manifests itself in so many different ways. It can come through playing a character, through conversations, through the clothes you choose to wear and how you decide to do your hair or make up. We are always telling stories. I enjoy being mindful and intentional about the stories I tell and how they can have impact on those in proximity. And I’ve been this way as far back as I can remember — I think it really comes from an interest and love of learning about people and the fascination I have with the idea that there are endless ways we can choose to move through life. I’ve always been the most moved by TV shows and movies so acting is really my first love, but through my show Here For It, podcasting has opened a similar kind of door that I’ve grown to be really passionate about. The ability to make an impression on someone through a story is something I honor and don’t take lightly.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
This is hard because there are so many more than just three. Each one leads to the next and the next and the next. But if I had to pick, I think the desire to learn, to continuously release fear and negative thoughts, and to not take someone’s opinion as fact have been some of the biggest. I love learning and I will continue cramming things into my brain for the rest of my life. Self talk is so so important, you will never get where you want to go if you keep telling yourself all the reasons something won’t work out. And someone told me once, “Everyone is entitled to their opinion: doesn’t make it right, doesn’t make it mine.” Having the choice to unsubscribe from things that don’t align with you is really powerful. It sounds so silly, but you just have to wake up each day and make a decision to be and embody that person that has the qualities you want.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
It is so easy, especially now with the access we have through social media, to look for answers outside of yourself. I remind myself continuously to come back to me, to look inward and to just stay in my own lane. No one has the answers for you, except you. And I’ve really leaned into that this past year more so than ever before. It feels so much better to do things on your own terms and every time I do, I am reminded again and again why that’s always the best approach. Anytime I close social media, put my phone down and just sit with myself, the answers become so obvious.
