We were lucky to catch up with Grace Ojewole recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Grace , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from believing in myself and knowing that I can get through anything even when times get hard. I also get my resilience from my experiences in life that I went through which made me stronger. Even though at the time it seemed terrible anytime I rose above I felt like a Champ at the end. Because when God delivers you from a situation that seems impossible with God nothing is impossible. With prayer you’ll always come out on top at the end.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m an afrobeat rapper but also a geek at heart lol. I recently just finished up my master’s degree and I’m on to bigger and better things in my life. I received my bachelor’s degree from Howard University and I’m so blessed to have that school as my Alma Mater. That school definitely instilled that hustle mentality into my brain. Which is why I have the drive and ambition that I have today. Many successful people attended my school including Mrs. Kamala Harris our first African American Female Vice President. My school definitely taught me that you can achieve anything you want in life, if you just put in the work. My artistic ability is rap, I love to write my own music. I think it’s dope to have that unique talent, as a rapper. Just knowing that you wrote each lyric that you’re rapping about is dope to me. Growing up rappers that inspired me were Jay-Z, Notorious B.I.G, Tupac, Nas, Lil Wayne, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent, Foxy Brown, Nicki Minaj, Lil Kim, Kanye West, Mac Dre, E-40, Too Short, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole and many more. They had a unique style that stuck to me and inspired me to want to write my own music. Being an artist is more than just a hobby it’s my life. I can’t imagine myself doing anything else with my life other than making music. I want to be able to inspire young women to want to achieve anything they want in life and have the confidence knowing that they can. I’ve been writing music for a long time and I feel like I’m improving each song I make. I always compare my first rap to my current raps and laugh at them all the time lol. I plan on dropping more music soon because I love making music. It’s apart of my life and I always feel like there’s something missing when I’m not recording. Making music is literally therapeutic for me even when I’m going through the hardest times in my life. When I had to get through my final semester in grad school recently I feel like writing music got me through any day I wasn’t feeling motivated to write a paper. It’s definitely in my veins.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that I think were the most impactful in my life are perseverance, ambition, and confidence. Having these qualities I feel are really important if you want to be successful in life as an artist. You have to believe in yourself even if no one else does. There were so many times that I wanted to quit but I persevered because I always imagine the end goal and what I plan to achieve. You can’t allow anyone to bring you down and tell you that you can’t when in reality you CAN. They’re not God and don’t hold the future in their hands. Many people doubted me and still continue to doubt me but I praise God that I never gave up. The best advice that I would give a new artist is to not give up and keep going because all the greats did and look at where they are. And always believe in yourself and stay true to who you are. And remember that you’re not here to impress the world but God at the end of the day. So what anyone thinks about you really doesn’t matter if you really think about it. I’ve had a lot of instances where I could’ve quit but I never gave up because I believe in myself that much.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always open to working with artists and different producers. I’m currently looking to work with any producers so if if you’re reading this and you’re a producer it’s not too late lol. All of my links and information on how you can reach me will be at the end of this interview. I’m also currently an independent artist looking for representation so if you’re interested in working with me my information will be at the end of this interview. I’m trying to start off this year right and start making more music so if any artist are looking to collaborate with me any time soon please don’t hesitate to reach out to me and I’ll gladly make an appearance. I’m also an actress as well and would love to make a lot of acting appearances this year, so if you’d like to work with me and you have a project coming up please don’t hesitate to reach out to me.
I’m also interested in modeling opportunities.
