Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tommi Aura. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tommi, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I definitely get my worth ethic from my mother. Growing up, I watched my mother be the provider and the bread-winner for her family. She made so many sacrifices for my sibling and I to have the best holidays, birthdays and to make sure we never went without. Her sacrifice and dedication to her family has really inspired me to work hard and be self-sufficient as an artist and adult today.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF TOMMI AURA.
Tommi Aura is an androgynous artist taking over pop music. Their sound
can be described as experimental pop with elements of electronic and
dance. Aura has an extensive career in modeling, having worked with
clients such as Haus Labs by Lady Gaga, Vogue Magazine, Elle
Magazine and Chanel just to name a few. Taking from their fashion
experience, Aura merges the fashion with their music to create a dynamic
experience for any observer of the Aura brand. As of recent, Tommi Aura
has played at Boston Pride and was featured in Flaunt Magazine for the
exclusive premiere of their recent single off their first EP, “Audacity”.
My newest single “I’m Not A Boy” pays homage to Britney Spears’ “I’m Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman”. Taking
the inspiration from Bollywood to give an unforgettable pop production with melodies that will be stuck in your head for hours on end; “I’m Not A Boy” comes to life. The song is a message about identity. Tommi is used to a lot of hate online for how they present and who they are, so as a response to all the noise, Aura decided to create a message that is easier to sing than talk about. An anthem to remind people to never box themselves in, remember who they are and to re-inspire that self-confidence we all look for within.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most impactful skills I’ve learned along my path have been firstly, kindness, being kind to everyone I meet and work with. You never know who you’re working with and who will succeed. Second skill I’ve learned is working smarter not harder. Burnout is real and it’s important to take care of myself for my art, but there’s a way to work hard without exhausting myself in the end. The third skill is boundaries. Understanding how I desire to be treated, what I’m looking for for my career and when I work with people and sticking to my guidelines. This is not only protecting myself, but it allows others to show up the best they can when working with me. Sticking by these three principles will help a newbie go very far!
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
Becoming Supernatural by Joe Dispenza is an incredible book and highly recommend any artist reading to buy the book after enjoying this interview! It has changed my perception on manifestation and the science behind manifestation. If you’re someone who thinks that kind of stuff is “woo woo”, read this book and change your life.
