Meet Marina Gee

We recently connected with Marina Gee and have shared our conversation below.

Marina, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?

My optimism comes from zooming out. It’s amazing how many problems a broader perspective can solve.

I’ve taken lots of flights over the last couple of years in all kinds of weather. There’s been many times I’m driving to the airport in the middle of a downpour on a gloomy day. I’m stressed because I’m late, the traffic is horrible, everything is wet, it’s hard to see…What’s always been so interesting to me about those days is that no matter what the day looks like on the ground, the minute the airplane takes off and breaks through the clouds, it is always beautiful and clear and sunny.

I think life is a lot like that. It’s easy to be running around in the day to day, feeling the stress of the challenges I’m facing. But the truth is, being alive is a gift. The opportunity to experience everything I come in contact with is a gift. The problems that I have in front of me are problems that I am lucky to have. And life is so constantly changing, no matter how much any of us may try to stop it. So I try to live each day noticing the good thing and forgiving everything else.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I own a digital marketing agency that works with brands all around the country to bring life to their online presence. We’ve worked with countless industries to help companies drive their business goals through social media campaigns, email marketing, ad strategy, funnel building, website development, and more.

In addition to that, my team hosts trainings all around the country throughout the year to help bring marketing and content creation strategy to professionals and students eager to move up in the field. We host in-person Bootcamps and online courses to make everything we know about digital marketing accessible to those who might not be in a position to hire an agency yet. Our next Bootcamp is in the San Francisco Bay Area in April!

I am so proud of the team I have built and the relationships we’ve cultivated along the way. What makes MG Media special is the way in which every single one of our employees pours their heart into what they do.

In addition to my agency, I am a professional latin dance instructor. I travel to workshops to teach and perform around the world every year. The combination of these two paths has made my life full of adventure and creativity and I am so grateful for every moment.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The first – represent yourself well in EVERY situation. Every interaction you have with people and every project you work on becomes a representation of you and your brand. You never know who is watching. You never know who will circle back into your story. Make sure everything you do is something you are proud of.

The second – cultivate a good team early on. The strongest asset you ever have in this world is people. Your growth as business owner (but also just as a human) is limited by your capacity to make good relationships with people. If you prioritize a strong team, it will take you farther than good margins and impressive revenue ever can.

The third – get comfortable not knowing. If you need to feel completely certain before taking your next step, you won’t go anywhere. I do not feel confident in my knowledge. Every day I am faced with things I have no answer for. What I am confident in is my ability to be resourceful, to learn, to ask questions, and to make it happen one way or another.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents never told me something wasn’t possible. They only ever asked me how I was going to work for it. Like most kids, I wanted to be all kinds of things when I was little. I remember telling my parents how I was going to be a scientist by day and a singer and an actress by night. They never once responded with the logical answer of “that’s not possible”. It was always “Ok. How are you going to do that?” Those are the tiny moments that create a profound impact on the way I see the world and how I move through it. Since getting older, I’ve wanted to learn a new language. I’ve wanted to dance at a high level. I’ve wanted to start a company. The first thing my mind goes to is always “Ok. How am I going to do that?”. I am so grateful to them for giving me that perspective and for supporting me in every step I’ve ever taken.
