Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jared Hale. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jared , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I keep my creativity alive by always looking at things in a different light. When I find a subject that interests me I don’t always make the most common version of that subject, I like to add my own spin on things to add a little flair.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I began building costumes as a young child using cardboard and duct tape as my medium and adhesive of choice. As I grew older my designs and desire to create grew in complexity. I knew for what I wanted to do cardboard and duct tape would not suffice. After doing research I learned what cosplay was and an easy and accessible material most people use is EVA foam.
I did more research on the medium and decided to take a dive into using a new material. After a lot of trial and error I eventually learned how to use the material properly and effectively.
Now I pass on what I have learned in my YouTube videos so that other people can further their foamsmithing knowledge.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three things that I feel were most impactful in my journey were always keeping my head up even when I failed. I learned from my mistakes and moved on. Not being afraid of starting over if the project wasn’t heading in the right direction, and not being afraid to ask for advice from someone more knowledgeable in that area or where to find specific materials.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed about a project or deadline I keep a clear mind about it, because if I begin to rush the project I will make mistakes, so I take a deep breath, pray, and move forward calmly and focused on finishing the project to the best of my ability. If I begin to feel burnt out on a specific project I will work on something smaller to get my mind off of the big piece. So when I start on it again I can look at it with fresh eyes and move forward ready to finish it.
