Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Enrique Puerto. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Enrique, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
To keep creativity alive and constant, I like to interact deeply with nature, I usually go running inside different forests, visit beaches, connect with the sea, listen to birds singing, or simply observe the simplest things in life, nature around me.
That is a way to connect with some experiences from the past from which I can draw inspiration, often nostalgic in a good way.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I like to always remember my roots and in some way, I always have them present. I was born and raised on the beach, in Puerto Progreso Yucatán, Mexico, a very quiet place, and Yucatán a place with too much culture.
Influenced by my maternal grandfather, sculptor, painter, and writer. My greatest inspiration, the main influencer on my taste in art.
I studied graphic design to have an artistic approach. For a short time I experimented with advertising design, but I found that branding was what moved me the most, with illustration it was the perfect mix.
On the other hand, something that complements my passions is sports.
My Father introduced me to Taekwondo at a young age, from the age of 13 until I was 21, reaching 1st dan black belt.
From the age of 22, I started running, and from there, my passion for athletics was unleashed.
I wanted to do something to improve myself, improve my times, and maybe set local records, or even see how far I could go. So life took me to the great Mexico City to train to gain more capacity, and there, my mind expanded in many ways, both sportingly, culturally, and in terms of design.
This is how I can now dedicate myself to running, to designing, and to designing things to run.
The sum of my experiences and what I have experienced has led me to do what I do now.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1.- Follow my instinct of wanting to do what I like to do. 2.- Constant curiosity to learn new things.
3.- Venturing to do things without thinking so much about the consequences.
If something you like to do is because you saw it from someone, do your research and contact that someone to try to learn from them.
Overthinking things too much can limit you from doing it, plus you will have wasted time. Do something to get a start, and along the way you resolve whatever comes your way.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
Fear and myself.
Thanks to finding myself and my loneliness, I have been able to face various experiences even with fear. Facing it frees you.
We don’t know how you would resolve any situation. But facing it and confronting it is how it has helped me develop the skills, qualities, and knowledge that I have acquired.
