We were lucky to catch up with Ryan “Ricky” Dedmon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ryan “Ricky”, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
If I’m being honest my work ethic is actually a reaction to a number of losses, combined with being raised by hard working parents. Most of the time the very thing that motivates me are reflections of moments when I loss. Remembering why I loss, how I loss, and how it made me feel. I believe I usually push past my limits because I understand that for me, the feeling of victory that comes with a win or giving my best effort is much more satisfying than to lose from never trying at all. I deeply regret for a portion of my life though I did try, it wasn’t 100%. I often wonder the outcomes of if I would have buckled down and given that extra 20 percent to make it 100. What could’ve been, what could I have changed, how could I have made a difference. In this season of my life, I’m not into regret. Let’s just go ahead and give our all the first time and enjoy the outcome knowing we laid it all out.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am proud to be the Craetor, Owner, and Designer of Royal by Ricky apparel. The brand is inspired by the Soul and Passion, and Dreamer inside of us. It speaks to gifts inside of you and the culture around you. It represents positive affirmations and changing the narratives about you or around your life. The brand is about reclaiming who you are, where you’re from and where you’re headed. It’s about not just dressing to appeal but speaking through fashion.
From the time I was young I always wanted to help people know and understand that they’re great and valued each in different ways. That we were created to be powerful and amazing and reflect that of God which is within us. So naturally being a young artist and also being crazy about fashion I had to combine the two but not without the powerful message of remembering who you are and who’s you are. I feel once we’re empowered to realize we can achieve anything, not just some of us but all of us. Success and happiness will literally be natural orders of life.
Right now for me and as a brand I’m really in a season of expansion. Learning new ways of how to expand my audience and my outreach. How to expand my network and my mind when it comes to partnerships. Even my vision and what it looks like to see new and old things from a different perspective.
I hope that in the near future more and more people come across Royal by Ricky and find different things that they love about it and want to share with others.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I believe one of the first qualities necessary for any journey is you need to be relentless. There has to be something about you and your drive that says “We’re not giving up”. For a 2nd quality, you have to believe you deserve it and deserve to be where you’re trying to get to. You have to be the first one to believe in you, because there will be days and moments where no one else will.
Third you have to have crazy faith and belief that anything is possible. Even if it doesn’t make sense, it’s not natural, you’ve never seen anyone do it. You still have to have a mustard seed of faith that for you and with your God, it’s possible.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
I would continue to enjoy every 24 hours I was blessed with. I would get out my dreams and spread my gifts as far as I possibly could. I would make incredible memories with family and I would pass down knowledge and wisdom that would last beyond my life. I would finalize my legacy and make sure my name carried positively among those my story comes across. I would tell every single person I love just how much I love them and give them something to remember me by. Lastly I would constantly share that God is Love and Jesus is Truth, and that choosing to acknowledge that, accept it, embrace and reflect it will be the biggest and best gift of this life they will ever experience.
