Meet Ashlyn Ayers

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ashlyn Ayers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Ashlyn, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
My confidence comes from the abundance of love and support I have received throughout my life from my family. One person that has always bragged about me to anyone they encountered is my mom. She is my rock. My mom has always supported everything I’ve ever wanted to do and anything I’ve done. She’s always front and center at any event that I’m a part of rooting me on. One thing that she told me when I was entering high school that has stayed with me is to always walk with your head held high. Without her and her support, I probably wouldn’t be as confident as I am.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a Makeup Artist based in Los Angeles. Doing makeup is definitely a passion of mine and I’ve been doing it professionally for 12 years. My work has appeared in TV shows, films, music videos, editorials as well as commercials. I have also had the pleasure of creating makeup looks for the red carpet. There are so many things I love about what I do, but if I had to narrow it down, I would say that the people I meet and the places I get to visit doing something that I love are some of the best parts of my job.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would have to say that the willingness to learn new things, confidence and a passion for creating would be the three qualities I feel were the most impactful on my journey.

My advice to those just starting out is to remind yourself that what you know now is only a fraction of what you will come to know in your future. We’re truly never finished learning and when it comes to the beauty industry, there will always be new products and there will always be new ways or new techniques to be learned in order to become a master of your craft. The more you know, the further it will take you. Also, fake it until you make it. What I mean by that is always be confident in what you do and never turn a job down even if you don’t have an extensive kit or even if it’s your first paid job. If you have confidence in yourself, you will be able to work with what you have and you will succeed.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who has an idea of what they want but also understands that I am a professional and will make sure I give them the look they want that will compliment the features they have. I also love a client who takes care of their skin. I think that’s a dream for any Makeup Artist honestly. It allows for my skills to really be displayed. Also, when a client can give me their full attention, it really allows me to do my best work, since distractions make it very difficult to deliver quality in a timely fashion.
