We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Solimar Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Solimar, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My grandma. Since I was little she kept me super busy and doing a bunch of after school activities.
This has helped me so much in my adult life to have a good work ethic.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Solimar and it means Sun and Sea. I grew up in the Dominican Republic and moved to the US when I was 17.
I have always been a dreamer and a creative, and it was always my dream to be in the fashion space.
This is how UNBTHRD came about. Creating this brand has been both challenging but the most beautiful thing I have done.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
A good work ethic: Being able to hold myself accountable and to get my tasks done with no one to supervise me has been due in part to the work ethic that was instilled in me when I was younger.
Video editing and content creation: Being a small business owner means that you wear many hats and having been in the creator space before hand has allowed me to pour all of my social media knowledge into my business.
Product sourcing experience: I worked at a job where part of my duties was to product source. This has made the biggest impact on my business. It has given me the confidence to be able to reach out to suppliers knowing that I have the knowledge and experience that is needed for sourcing.
I would say to not get frustrated and to implement systems in place to make the journey easier for you. It can be something as simple as making a “TO-DO” list every morning before you start work.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Getting overwhelmed as a small business owner is very easy.
We wear so many hats and sometimes there is just not enough time in a day to get everything done.
When I get overwhelmed I try to take some time to decompress. I’ll take 15, 20 or 30 minutes (depending on level of stress) and do something that calms me down or brings me happiness.
