We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kristie Nguyen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristie, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I would say my parents influenced me with their work ethics. Having immigrated to the US in the late 70s, my parents works very hard to ensure that their children didn’t have to work. They only asked that we study hard so that our future would be bright. If one parent was working the other was sleeping and they’d take turns with one parent always home with the kids. Seeing how hard they worked to provide for their family made me realize at an early age that growing up in the US was a privilege and that I shouldn’t waste this opportunity to learn and better myself.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As an optometrist, I enjoy helping my patients see more clearly than before they saw me. I love sharing new products and technology with my patients so they can take the best care and learn the most about their eye health!!
It’s great being able to educate my patients in the chair but with social media I can reach a larger audience. Helping the masses learn more about what optometrists can see during an eye exam, different technology available to enhance the eye exam experience, and what products are available benefits my colleagues and patients.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Here are 3 things that was most impactful in my journey of growth: mindset, perseverance, and support.
Mindset is probably one of the hardest to overcome. Some of us have limited beliefs holding us back from excelling. A professional mindset coach could help you break this down and move forward.
Perseverance is important because you must not give up in reaching your goal. There will be many hurdles: financial, physical and mental that you may have to work through. Quitting isn’t it.
That’s why having a good support system is crucial. Whether it’s family, friends or like minded individuals you need someone to cheer you on.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I’m feeling overwhelmed I often take a break. Sounds easy but sometimes it’s hard when you’re so stuck on trying to keep moving. I have to remind myself that I’m only human and that sometimes certain things are outside of my control. In those instances, it’s best to take a step back and evaluate what’s going on. Often times when I take a break aka mini vacation I come back more inspired and motivated. Listening to my body is super important. Renewing my mental and physical health daily is crucial to my balance of life.
