We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dana Bresin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dana, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
A strong work ethic is trained by example. I had the wonderful opportunity to work and watch my father in his industry, the restaurant business, Working hard is an every day in restaurants! He would wake at the crack of dawn, head into the restaurant and greet the suppliers, take inventory, put food products away. Relate with positivity to customers and handle the operations from the welcome at the door through order taking, management and cooking, delivery, food prep, cleaning, clearing and managing expectations, and when that was complete, there was book keeping, ordering and so much more. My father never stopped. He always taught me to walk with purpose and both hands full, you can walk with items on both trips he would say! It was an amazing upbringing to be raised in a restaurant and to shadow such a strong force with a passion for work. He told me on many occasions love what you do and you will never work! I have found that in loving event planning!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I have been in the events industry for over 20 years, I have combined my training in restaurant ownership, youth advising and Project management, honing all these skills together and being able to create special events with families, corporations and couples make my work, my pleasure! I have always loved the interactions and working of people and relationships, what makes event planning so special to me is the ability to bring people together, gain trust and give them the results they didn’t even know they wanted. It is so important to the brand and business to gain trust and never take it for granted. We earn each and every clients trust! We hold it sacred! Once trust is established, creating and sharing visions of rooms, how food service can be anticipated. Look and feels in the room all become the passion project. The outcome will always delight our clients and that is what makes work, not be work! Always enjoy your creations!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Critical thinking and being able to bend and flex in the eyes of chaos became my skill set! Developing a way of speaking to people and making sure that you are the best listener you can be is crucial. Everyone reacts to someone paying attention! I have developed my skills to see a clients vision, to connect with vendors, to being professional to the room at all times. People like to be respected. In turn they will respect you. It is your biggest asset to listen and learn even when you think that you know the right way, there is always room to improve. Don’t ever become comfortable in the idea that you know what you are doing, there is always someone or some way that will prove to be different or better and you need to always be open to it!
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
I would spend the next decade with family and friends and travel so that I can experience all that is out there. I love to see new things and I am always open for the learning!
