We were lucky to catch up with Mesha Hutchinson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mesha, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop your
At a point in my life, I developed my confidence from self-help books. I would read through as many books as I could and try to apply it to my life. However as soon as I had finished one, I needed to purchase another, and I learnt that I was looking for quick resolutions to help me ‘feel better’. This all changed when I developed a relationship with Jesus. The Lord tells me that before he formed me, he knew me in the womb.
There’s a level of confidence that comes with right-standing with the Lord because his love never fails, he always keeps my foot from being caught. I know that no matter what happens, the Almighty is in control. Really learning my identity in Christ has helped me step into rooms and spheres without experiencing imposter syndrome.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do
Being a teacher and private tutor is the most rewarding job! I’m able to witness students develop their confidence and experience new things. It’s so important nowadays to allow children to recognise that it is ok to make a mistake and that life is about growing. There’s an unspoken pressure on children nowadays to be something they are either not or too young to be. Being a teacher allows me to truly nurture children during those early innocent stages of their lives.
The Lord has guided me towards having a larger impact on the teaching industry and support other teachers out there. Today many teachers and senior leaders are bogged down by day-to-day paperwork and the overall running of the school. This sometimes takes away from focusing on the quality of education we’re delivering to our children. In order to deliver the best, we need to ensure our teachers are being supported too.
It’s more than pay, it’s more than holidays it’s about our continuous professional development. Towards the end of summer, I’ll be launching a network which focuses on improving the quality of education by focusing on the professional development being delivered to teachers.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
As cliché as it may sound, being hardworking, determined and honest. These are three qualities which will always carry you through. Many people only work hard until the first obstacle comes. It’s about pushing through and remaining consistent. Ruth is a beautiful of example of this in the Bible, she worked super hard even during a troublesome time in her life, and that hard work blessed herself and others.
The one piece of advice I would give is to stay true to yourself. In a race, the minute you begin to step into another person’s lane , you’re instantly disqualified. Stay true even when your situations suggests otherwise, remain honest and focused.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The Bible. One of my favourite scriptures is Matthew 4:4 ‘Man shall not live by bread alone but by the word that proceeds of out the mouth of the Lord.’ This scripture really taught me that no matter how I tried to feed myself with external commodities, the only thing which can sustain me is the word of the Lord. I thank Him for this each day.
Thank you for taking the time to interview me, I’ve really enjoyed the experience.
