We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Matt Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Matt, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I started the podcast in October 2020, I will say though, besides starting this brand and creating content, personally my life has been challenging. In the last few years, I battled unemployment, getting laid off, losing my apartment, dealing with Mental Health issues, and a whole lot of other things that I hope not even my worse enemies have to deal with. Its been a tough stretch, but I will say with my parents, brothers, grandmas, aunt, and best friends, they have kept me from not giving up on not only this show, but my life. As the worst things kept happening to me financially, I realized I am still alive and have amazing people around me, and that helped me keep my confidence up.
It really took until this October, visiting my old apartment to start loving life again and I want to give a 3 special shout outs, one my own family for still being there for me, taking me in when I lost my apartment, and helping me figure out what I need to do in order to gain confidence in myself again. I also want to give a shout out to my friend Sam, Will, and the Onchari’s, who especially kept me going and showed me how important it is to support someone in need and not judge them for what they are going through, besides the unconditional love my family gave me. The Onchari’s really are a 2nd family to me and I will forever be in debt to them for their support.
My last shout out is to my friend Ryan, who is always willing to listen to me and give sound advice and being a great friend.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
The World is a Better Place, Because you are here to join us! My name is Matt Brown and I am the Host and Producer of the Productive Conversations Podcast. On all Podcasting Platforms and YouTube!
Productive Conversations is a bi-weekly (sometimes tri-weekly) podcast that covers the worlds of Sports, News, Entertainment, and Culture. Every single episode has meaning and the goal is to get something out of each episode, hence being productive either creating the content or listening to it.
We have a variety of different podcast episodes through out the week. We usually do one pop culture based show, one sports based show, and during certain weeks, we also do different “variety” podcasts.
These “variety” podcasts include the podcast game show “Topic Thunder”, The TweetCap, Life’s Questions, ProductiveCast Livestreams, The Timeline Pod, Quick Hits, and more.
We post episodes 2-3 times a week and we post reels/tik toks every single day on our social media channels. You can check us out on Instagram @productiveconversationspodcast, X/Twitter @prodconvopod, Facebook @productiveconversations, Tik Tok @ProductiveConversations, and YouTube @productiveconversations. We also post addition
I am proud to say since October 2020, this show has had over 300 episodes, featured 120 different guests, has paid sponsorship, been featured in other magazines, and has had over a million views on our content.
Each podcast is either a panel discussion or an interview.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Consistency: If you want to get your name out there in content creation, you have to always create content, no matter what. Even in the beginning it maybe hard to get people to see your stuff. But if you just make stuff every week and you keep posting your content on social media, you will eventually find an audience. It is easy to give up and be discouraged, but you just have to keep putting your stuff out there, even if the views are low at the moment. Eventually the algorithm will help you out as long as you post intriguing content.
Originality: Be yourself, don’t be afraid to be yourself. If you really want to make a name for yourself, you have to show the world who you are. You don’t want to be the next this and next that, you want to be the first you and the world will accept you for who you are if you are willing to show why you are special. Trust me, people would rather see you for you than imitating someone else’s content.
Tenacious: I hope one day I can get paid full time to make content. There is so much competition out there and if you are not a nepo baby, it can be hard to get your name out there. There are days you probably feel like no one is watching and you want to give up. DO NOT DO THAT. You will come off more authentic and a have a lot more respect if you keep going at it in the game of creating content. I still have a lot to prove if I want millions of people to tune into what I have to say and if I give up on that dream, then its not worth it. So believe in yourself so that other people will believe in you as well.
YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH!
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
If I feel down, I look at old family photos or old photos of me and my friends. I look at these pictures and remember why I have them. It is such a blessing to have these amazing memories and I remember why I try to be a good person. It is to enjoy these people around me and appreciate that they love me. So seeing pictures of us living our best life is the best thing you can do if you are feeling sad. It reminds you that you matter and these people love you.
I also look at content I love. That can be watching Yankees, Giants, Knicks, and Rangers best moments highlights. That can be watching my favorite Performers and Filmmakers winning Prestigious Awards. That can be watching Conan O’Brien, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Bear, The Sopranos, David Letterman clips or episodes. That can be watching concerts of my favorite musicians/groups like The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Nirvana, John Mayer, etc. That can be watching my favorite podcasts/radio clips like Mike and the Mad Dog, NightCap, Pat MaCafee, Boomer & Gio, PMT, Conan O’Brein Needs A Friend, The Rewatchables, Joe and Evan/ Evan and Tiki, Al & Jerry, Joe Rogan, Stephen A, Productive Conversations, etc.
I just always look at things that make me happy and feel good and then remember I can do the same for someone else with my content.
