Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Paul Kim. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Paul, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I’ve always loved music from a young age while growing up listening to Pop, Rock, Hip Hop, and EDM. It wasn’t until I started to create the art that I knew that this is what I wanted to do and that this was my passion. During high school I learned how to play the guitar with basics chords and attempted to play popular songs. After a 15 year absence from playing the guitar, I decided I wanted to start playing again during Covid. We all remember when we were required to stay home and had a lot of time on our hands. During that time, I was able to find a Taylor Acoustic that I had always wanted, allowing me to start learning and polishing my skills again. After about a couple months of practicing I decided I wanted to learn how to record instruments and get into music production and audio engineering. This is when my whole world has changed as I dove deep in the world of how to create music. My days were consumed by learning as much as I can through watching youtube videos, reading books, and watching interviews. With the help of other producers and engineers, I was able to learn as fast as possible which got me to where I am today. It’s one of those moments when you realize that this is what you want to do and nothing is going to stop you from achieving your goals.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I go by Paulie Beats and I am a music producer from Los Angeles, CA. My main focus is to produce music for others and collaborate to open doors for more opportunities. I’m always looking for artist or other producers to collab with whether you are a EDM vocalist or Hip hop artist. I am also pursuing a career as an artist as i love to make house music so my goal is to build a fanbase and be able to play for a crowd. I believe it is important to have multiple skills so I also have the skills to mix and master tracks for artist. The most satisfying part of working on music is bringing your art to life with the struggles of getting everything as perfect as it can be. I invite everyone to follow me on this journey into my world of music production as I’m grateful for every opportunity and I can t wait to see where this path leads.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One big quality for people who are starting on their journey is to be eager learn. Learn as much as you can to develop your skills to perfect your craft. It won’t be easy at first because of the struggle of thinking you will become great quickly. So take your time and develop the skills you need to get better everyday.
Another quality is to be consistent. The more you work at it, the better you will become. You will not be the best at anything right away so you will have to put in the work to get better by practicing. I think showing up everyday and putting in the work whether it be for 30 minutes or 2 hours will make you improve greatly.
One last quality I believe to be very important is, to be a good person. The music industry is a service industry and we give our services to other artist and musicians. Being kind and considerate will get you further than you would expect because it is a business, and who likes going to a business where they don’t feel respected.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The most recent book that I’ve read that has helped me in my development is ‘The Creative Act: A Way of Being’ by Rick Rubin. One main point he suggests is that, “The audience comes last.” I believe that when you create your art, it should for yourself first. There is no way of knowing how the audience will react to your music and that you should create for yourself first. When you create something truly for yourself, you are doing the best thing that you can do for the audience.
