Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Molly Winters. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Molly, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
When I was a little girl, I would haul out my parents’ heavy 80’s era typewriter and write stories for hours. My mom would say, “There’s Molly, working on the great American novel,” because I was always typing away.
But as I got older, graduated college, and entered the “real” world, I could never bring myself to say that I was a writer.
It gave me the willies even to consider it.
I hung out with a bunch of poets for a period in my twenties and I never breathed a word of it. I felt like Ralphie in a Christmas story, as he glances over his shoulder in class, like, “Who, ME?”
It took me YEARS to get to a place where I could say, “I’m a writer.”
And you know what got me there? WRITING FOR OTHER PEOPLE.
When I began working in a corporate marketing department and took on more and more writing projects, I realized I could call myself a copywriter.
Then I branched out and began taking on clients of my own and realized they not only paid me to write for them, but they LOVED what I wrote.
Maybe I really was a writer!
This was years ago, and now I fully embrace the title. But as I reflect, I wonder — What. In. The. Actual. Heck?
Why do we do this to ourselves?
Though copywriting is my skill set, it’s not necessarily my purpose. But it led me to recognize human connection as my holy grail.
My purpose is to help others feel seen and heard through human connection, in whichever communication form it takes.
Because honestly, it’s all any of us really wants in life, right?
That feeling of finding your people, being understood, and understanding others.
Being seen, and seeing others.
Showing up, and having others show up with you.
The nice things, comfortable homes, and expensive gadgets are great perks — and ones I enjoy. But when you work in homes and see over and over that stuff isn’t what truly matters, it helps you understand that this connection between people is what we all truly want.
Great conversation, laughter, stories…and bonding over business AND life. It’s what helps us understand that we have more in common than we think.
And through the writing I did for other people, I began to trust myself and realize that we can do the same thing in our business writing.
We can use it as a place to attract those we connect with most so that our business feels full of purpose, too.
You just have to lean into your voice and trust yourself.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Sure thing! I live in Bend, Oregon with my husband and two kiddos. It’s an outdoorsy town, so we do a lot of camping, hiking, and such. But my favorite activity is curling up with a cup of coffee and a good book.
Years ago, I was a professional organizer, so when I got into copywriting, it felt natural to begin writing for organizing and interior design companies. Over time, I created my RELATE Writing Method™ to help them attract their ideal people and achieve higher sales.
But my passion is helping people build a deeper connection with their readers — so they can help more people, change more lives, and increase revenue.
I offer done-for-you copywriting services for websites, sales pages, and email sequences — as well as DIY budget-friendly writing support for websites, email marketing, blogs, and more.
And because I love human connection so much, I started the Business Simplicity Summit™ in 2023 and will be hosting it again in 2024. The mission? To unite a variety of groups in the professional organizing & interior design industries to foster connection, build community, and advance careers. Because my theory is if we simplify business, we can help more people simplify their lives.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. I’m passionate about people and what makes us tick. I studied psychology and sociology in school.
2. I’m a good listener and observer. I notice things others may not.
3. I’m intuitive and can understand others pretty well. I know how to ‘read a room.’
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
In case I haven’t made it clear, I love connecting with other people! 🙂 I’d love to collaborate with other people who are out there building community and connection in their industries — and brownie points if you’re in the organizing or designing fields!
