We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brooke Ferreira. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brooke below.
Hi Brooke, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I think the first step was realizing that self-esteem was something that I needed to work on or develop! I was in therapy, and my therapist brought up exploring my self esteem. My first reaction was to become defensive. I didn’t feel like I lacked self-confidence, I’ve always felt secure in my ability to put myself out there. But then I got curious.
Self-esteem and self-confidence often get mixed up. I love how this resource separates the two:
“The terms self-confidence and self-esteem are often conflated. Confidence is a measure of faith in one’s own abilities; esteem is about our sense of self. It involves both thoughts and emotions and influences how we perceive others and interact with the world.” – Meredith Cicerchia
For me, this looked like having confidence in my ability to meet people, give a presentation, or finish a task but having a deep seeded belief that my voice wasn’t valuable and what others had to say was more important.
I then committed to using my voice whenever I could. In group class settings I started sharing my opinion more, with the people I cared and trusted most I practiced saying hard things. As I did this more I started to see how valuable my thoughts and feelings were. This seems simple but it was incredibly challenging. It was vulnerable and scary, but then it became second nature.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As the owner of Nurture and Be Therapy Services, my passion lies in curating a team of therapists with unique areas of expertise, ensuring that our clients receive the specialized care they deserve. Our group mental health therapy practice is more than just a service – we want every client to feel a warm embrace around them from the moment they come across our practice. From play therapy for children to specialized care for pregnancy and postpartum, we understand the importance of tailoring our approach to your specific circumstances. Our therapists are well-versed in addressing chronic illness, guiding individuals through life transitions, and offering support for couples and families. We take pride in being a holistic sanctuary by embracing authenticity and warmth in every session and connecting our clients with all of the support they need for their mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.
We’ve recently expanded our reach in Buford and Peachtree City, allowing us to hold more space for each and everyone one of you. 2024 is going to be an exciting year as we launch more groups, programs, support and free resources!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I’m a risk taker. Whenever I had been scared to do something in the past, like jumping off of a tall boat in Croatia or telling someone how I felt, I would count to 3 and then do it. So I did the same thing here.
1, 2, 3… I clicked “post” as I announced to social media that I was opening up my own group practice. A blessing in disguise was that I did this three days before I delivered my daughter. So while I was on my already planned maternity leave, I was able to do a lot of the networking, planning and organizing that goes into building a business without feeling the financial hit. I remember seeing my first few inquiries and thinking, “oh my gosh, it’s working!” There were and still are times that I think to myself, what am I doing? Can I really do all of this? In these moments, I look at my daughter and remind myself who I am doing it for.
I’m a feeler. I think this allows for true connection with my clients and team.
I believe in myself and the power of the universe. I truly believe that the universe, higher power, whatever you want to call it, is always working FOR me.
You’re doing an incredible job! And if you’re feeling uncertain despite your efforts, remember to trust yourself. You were made for this. I did, and it’s transformed not just my career but also who I am as a person. You’re stronger and more capable than you realize, and your journey, no matter how challenging, is shaping an incredible story for you and your loved ones.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
1000% hands down learning how to be a leader. I’m sort of a perfectionist dreamer. Meaning, when I have a vision, I can be critical and blunt if things aren’t how I picture them in my head. I am learning how to soften and pivot and hold space for everyone’s humanness (including my own). I want to model true authenticity as a leader because as a practice, our highest value is authenticity. We practice this with one another and make space for our clients to do the same. We want to see every part of you.. messy, silly, sad, chaotic, sensitive, empowered, anxious… ALL OF IT, and we promise to do the same! At the core, we are all imperfect humans trying to figure out this thing called life.
