We were lucky to catch up with Daphne Mathis McCree recently and have shared our conversation below.
Daphne, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I found my purpose through fishing which brings fulfillment and adventure. I was dating this guy and one day I asked him, “what do you like to watch on tv”, he replied, “fishing and boats”. Fast forward, we watched a fishing channel on YouTube and I became intrigued. I found myself watching a lot of fishing videos and decided to go fishing one day by myself. So I purchased a pole from Walmart and the rest is history. I became so obsessed with the sport, I started fishing every day after work.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the CEO of Reel Beauty Outdoors which is a fishing brand, apparel and accessories. I consider myself a newly found fisherwoman. One of the first African American Women Fishing Brand and Apparel. In addition to finding my passion and purpose, I am also a Full Time Paralegal at a Law Firm. I earned my Paralegal degree in 2003. I am 44 years old, no kids and recently divorced.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
I was kicked out of my moms house while going through a divorce. I was homeless for a short period of time amongst living in a hotel for 3 months and friends. I finally got my own place and I’ve maintained it on my own with no family to support me for the past year. However, I found a passion for fishing and created a fishing brand. Reel Beauty Outdoors has helped me to overcome many obstacles.
