We were lucky to catch up with Vanessa Medina recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Vanessa, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
This is a tough one and it still creeps up from time to time, but I just focus on the now. I try not to let my own self doubt tarnish any of my achievements or goals that I’ve accomplished. It’s easy to feel unsuccessful and as though you are a phony, especially in a creative industry where you are constantly comparing your self and artistic abilities. The main thing is to understand where you started and remember everything you’ve accomplished along the way. The path you created is unique and it took a lot of hard work to get you to where you’re at now. Only you know your journey and you should be proud of that.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m currently a wedding photographer. I originally started photography as a hobby while in high school. Shooting random photos of my cats and family members, then branched out into other areas such as fashion photography. I actually just stumbled upon the fashion scene while living in miami, I loved it but it wasn’t something that was long term for me. I dabbled a bit in many areas of photo but around 7 years ago I found my calling to wedding photography and it’s been a passion of mine ever since. I love capturing someone’s love story. I also shoot engagement sessions, maternity and family portraits but weddings are my main focus.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I’d say if you want anything in life you need to be determined, learn from your mistakes and be ok with a struggle. Everything is a learning game, especially early on. You need to be ok with failure and tough decisions.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My mom was always my biggest supporter and gave me all the tools necessary to pursue my dreams and goals. She encouraged me and pushed me to be the best. I can’t thank her enough.
