We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Melanie Flint a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Melanie, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
As a woman who owns a cheese business, my optimism stems from my passion for the industry. I find joy and fulfillment in sharing the artistry of cheese and charcuterie, connecting with customers who appreciate quality products, and contributing to the culinary experiences of others. Additionally, the supportive community within the industry, as well as our neighborhood really fuels my optimism. The satisfaction of seeing my business grow and thrive contribute to a positive outlook, as well as embracing challenges as opportunities for growth.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Owning a charcuterie business in Denver is a truly rewarding experience that brings together my love for hospitality & connection, and creating memorable culinary experiences. It’s not just about selling products; it’s about cultivating connection. Whether customers are exploring our shop for the first time or are loyal patrons, we aim to provide an atmosphere where they can discover new flavors, share moments with loved ones, and elevate their appreciation for artisanal charcuterie. We are the only service in Denver that offers such a niche and beautiful product with a low lead time (next day delivery/same day pick up), insanely convenient online ordering, a huge delivery range, a variety of products that we are constantly innovating, and outstanding customer service. And we recently obtained our liquor license and now offer wine and beer- making Cheese Meat Board a one-stop-shop for date night!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three things that have been most impactful are:
1. – Having a genuine passion for the art of cheese-making and charcuterie has been crucial. This passion not only fuels my creativity but also sustains me through the challenges of running a business. My advice is to explore and identify what truly excites and motivates you in your chosen field. Let your passion be the driving force behind your efforts and decisions.
2.- The business landscape can be unpredictable, and being adaptable and resilient is key. Flexibility in responding to market trends, unexpected challenges, and customer preferences has been essential. To develop this skill, embrace change as an opportunity for growth rather than a setback. Stay informed about industry trends, be open to learning, and cultivate a mindset that sees challenges as stepping stones toward success.
3.- Building relationships within the local community and networking with fellow businesses, suppliers, and customers has been instrumental in the success of my business. Establishing a strong network not only opens up opportunities but also provides invaluable support. Early in your journey, actively seek opportunities to connect with others in your industry. Attend events, join local business associations, and engage with your community. Building a network will not only enhance your business connections but also offer a support system when needed.
My advice for those early in their journey is:
– Take the time to explore and identify what truly excites you. Your passion will be the foundation of your journey, and it will sustain you through the highs and lows.
– Stay curious and be open to continuous learning.
– Actively engage with your community and industry peers.
– Develop a resilient mindset that sees setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow. Adapting to change and staying persistent will be key to overcoming obstacles.
Remember, your journey is unique, and every experience, whether positive or challenging, contributes to your growth. Stay true to your passion, stay connected, and keep learning along the way.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
While I certainly don’t have it entirely dialed in yet, these are the few strategies I found helpful to regain focus and maintain balance: – Prioritize tasks- breaking down what feels overwhelming and identify the most critical tasks that need immediate attention
-Recognize that you don’t have to do everything on your own and delegate tasks to capable team members or seek support from others.
-Incorporate mindfulness techniques into your routine, such as meditation or mindful breathing. These practices can help you stay present, reduce stress, and enhance your ability to navigate challenges
-Regularly assess your work-life balance and make adjustments if needed. Balancing work and personal life is crucial for long-term well-being and sustainability.
