We recently connected with KARLY JEWELL and have shared our conversation below.
KARLY, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Music has always played a huge part in my life for as long as I can remember. My late Grandfather was a song writer so I had been watching and learning the craft of music and how to write songs from a very young age. When I started writing songs and connecting with people through song, I knew this was my purpose to share and to create. I had always struggled with jobs and trying to figure out what I wanted to be, until I realized I’m already doing what I’m meant to be doing I’m an artist and I have been my whole life. It’s like breathing, it’s always been there, I just do it.
When my Grandfather passed I knew I had big shoes to fill as a writer and I would now have another purpose to keep our family name alive in the music industry and I’ve had to put everything he taught me to use so I’ve been on another journey to work harder and reach goals that I never thought I would reach and slowly myself and my band are reaching.
Songwriting comes easy for me I’ve always looked at it like talking, I’m just telling a story with a music bed to compliment it.
The Band has changed slightly over the years but with a solid backing now it’s full steam ahead.
Band Members Include Mariano Marcos, Adrian Kluke and Shannon Stewart with a new member to be announced soon.
2023 and now this year has seen us write and record our biggest songs to date with Highly acclaimed and well known Producer Stuart Stuart who is very well known in Australia for working with The Veronicas, Dean Lewis and Sheppard just to name a few.
So 2024 is looking bigger then ever before.
In the past 13 years we’ve Travelled 5 times Internationally to California to tour L.A playing the dream gigs at the Whisky and The Viper Room and other venues
2014 being nominated for up and coming Rock Band attending the Vegas Rock Magazine Awards
Many more trips and goals in between. 2018 signed To Rav Medic MGMT with Mark Dalbeth
2019 Signing to Hitman Records Los Angeles – Phoenix Album – selling out at Tower Records Japan
2021 Rue Morgue Records released limited Vinyl Dancing With The Devil leading single from the Rue Morgue records Compilation Album Murders In The Rue Morgue volume II
2021 Late Night Remix- charting on Aus triple J unearthed charts #3 Electronic #4 Dance Charts top 30 overall #25
2022 Playing Airlie Beach Music Festival and Recently June 2023 our first International Tour of Japan Hitting Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a Melbourne based singer-songwriter and after moving here 15 years ago I guess I can really call Melbourne home now Originally I’m from a small country town called Wentworth in N.S.W. It was a quite town and a town you can see all the stars in the sky at night. Big dreams come from standing under the stars so it never hurts to look up at night. It didn’t take long after moving to Melbourne that I found my home on stage fronting a rock and roll band.
I can’t really imagine my life without music it’s been my whole life it’s just something I do everyday.
When I look ahead and see what we have planned for the next 12 months it’s super exciting. We get to do what we love and I’m so lucky to have the best band in the world, they are my everything and the best people. We are family.
We have such a great team around us and my Manager Mark Dalbeth- Rav Medic MGMT- Los Angeles has 100% backed me, believed In me and if you’re going to have a manager that’s exactly what it needs to be. Our ground team here in Aus and Anthem Entertainment for giving us our biggest ever shows here. We got big things coming but the best way to keep up with it all is to jump on all the socials.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My Grandfather buying me a Guitar at the age of 5 and teaching me 5 chords now little did he know that would impact my whole life. Passing that knowledge on would be the most amazing gift and would kick start what may be the most incredible journey in my life. Three most important things for me was to listen, learn and being open to step out of my comfort zone to learn more. The skill I am strongest at is definitely writing Hooks and all of that knowledge was passed on to me by my late Grandfather. I never stopped asking questions and I just kept at it. The most important thing is to never stop learning and just believing in yourself. Even now I’m always trying to learn more How can I be better at what I am doing? Is there anything I could be doing better ? I’m always out watching bands, listening to music, taking it all in and mostly just surrounding myself with things I love.
Building a strong team around you also helps.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Most definitely always looking for other artist’s to work and collaborate with. I’m very versatile and I write way too many songs. This year as a songwriter it’s on another level. I’ve already started writing songs to present to other bands and have a duet in the works. I’ve covered a fair bit of writing my own songs and have heaps of my own still to record but it’s also time to get my name out there a little bit more as a writer. I just love getting involved in writing and well sometimes hooks are hard to write or hear but that’s my job so if you’re stuck on lyrics I might just be the person you need.
