Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Samantha Amazan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Samantha, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I get my work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit from my father. As an immigrant from Haiti, he came to the US with nothing and worked hard as a long haul truck driver to support his family. No time off. No vacations. Instead of retiring and sitting around doing nothing, he decided to become an independent contractor. He saved up enough money to buy his own truck and he went out and secured contracts to haul loads. He became his own boss by doing what he loved and he is living it up in his new construction home in Haiti. He showed me that if you work hard, you can achieve anything. Put in the time, do the hard work, and reap the benefits.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I created The Wicked Scent Company because I was tired of getting sick from the store bought candles I was burning and wanted to see how I can get candles that were more natural and non toxic. I quickly realized that I can make them and customize them to scents that I love. Unique scents that I couldn’t find out in the market, Making candles started out as a means to an end but, turned into a creative passion project that morphed into something much bigger than I could have dreamed of. I love how creative I can be with the fragrances of my home and body products. Scent blending and scent matching are my favorite things to do. It’s a skill that you really have to have a good nose for. The Wicked Scent Company is known for their unique scents that are all custom blended and give you a real aromatic experience. This is why I like to introduce myself to people for the first time as their new home and body fragrance bestie because once you interact with my products, we will be besties and you’ll come to me for all your home and body fragrance needs.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities or skills that impacted my journey was the ability to be resilient, consistent, and focused because running a small business is not for the faint of heart. People will say it’s easy to have a small business. The only thing easy about running a small business is starting. That’s it. After that, about 70% of running a small business is hard work, pitfalls, disappointments, and adversity. This is where being resilient is important. You have to have the fortitude, and a bit of delusion, to keep going when things don’t pan out right. Because things will not pan out. Launches will flop. Sales goals won’t be met. But, you keep showing up for yourself and your brand because being consistent will show you the results you want. But to be resilient and consistent, you have to be focused. Once you feel you are focused on the success of your brand and small business, being resilient and consistent will come naturally.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Lately, as my small business is growing and scaling up, I’ve been feeling overwhelmed more frequently than I would like. I find that journaling and taking breaks has really helped me level out. Getting my thoughts and feelings out of my head and on paper helps me focus on how to remedy it. Sometimes, I need to take a break and walk away from the problem for a few so I can regroup and come back fresh.
