Meet Chris Manderino

We were lucky to catch up with Chris Manderino recently and have shared our conversation below.

Chris, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Growing up with a father who was a business owner deeply influenced my work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit. As the founder of LyfeFuel, I often reflect on the early lessons instilled in me by my dad. He was a hardworking business owner who believed in the value of dedication and commitment.

My work ethic finds its roots in the summers of my youth, where dawn meant the beginning of a day filled with physical labor. My father would wake me up early to join him on the job site – painting houses, moving ladders, and engaging in various manual tasks while also getting a peak at the ins and outs of running a business and managing employees. Those experiences taught me the fundamental importance of hard work and the satisfaction that comes from putting in an honest day’s effort.

I carried these lessons with me throughout life, which became a guiding force in my career as an athlete. I understood early on that success in sports, much like in business, required more than just talent. It demanded relentless hours in the gym, pushing beyond my limits, and consistently outworking my competitors.

The foundation laid by my father’s example became the bedrock of my work ethic. Whether it was building a business or pursuing athletic achievements, I carried with me the understanding that success is earned through persistent effort and a commitment to going above and beyond. My journey as an entrepreneur is a testament to the enduring impact of those early lessons, shaping not only the way I work but also the values that define LyfeFuel.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey as both a collegiate and professional athlete and now an entrepreneur and business owner, three qualities stand out as profoundly impactful: resilience, discipline, and the pursuit of continuous improvement.

The world of athletics is filled with ups and downs, victories and defeats. Resilience, the ability to bounce back from setbacks, was crucial in my journey. It’s essential to understand that challenges are inevitable, but it’s how you respond to them that defines your path. Embrace adversity as an opportunity to grow, learn from failures, and use setbacks as stepping stones towards future success.

Success in sports, as in entrepreneurship, requires unwavering discipline. The discipline to stick to a training regimen, prioritize goals, and consistently put in the work sets the foundation for achievement. Develop a routine that aligns with your objectives and adhere to it with dedication. Discipline is not just about the big moments; it’s about the small, daily choices that contribute to long-term success.

No matter what the pursuit, the best athletes, entrepreneurs, and leaders are those who never stop seeking improvement. Whether it’s refining techniques, enhancing (mental & physical) fitness levels, or expanding knowledge about your craft, the pursuit of continuous improvement is a driving force. Stay curious, be open to learning from experiences and others, and always strive to be a better version of yourself. Complacency is the enemy of progress; embrace a mindset of constant evolution.

For those early in their journey, my advice is simple:

Embrace Challenges, Establish Consistent Habits, Never Stop Learning.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
“The Obstacle is the Way” by Ryan Holiday has played a pivotal role in my personal and professional development. This book encapsulates profound wisdom drawn from Stoic philosophy, offering insights that have been transformative in navigating challenges and setbacks.

The central theme of the book revolves around the idea that obstacles are not hindrances but opportunities for growth. Instead of avoiding difficulties, embrace them, for they often contain the path to success and resilience.

The book advocates for a proactive approach in the face of adversity. Rather than being paralyzed by obstacles, take deliberate and strategic action. Channel energy into finding solutions and moving forward, turning obstacles into stepping stones for progress.

Stoicism teaches the importance of cultivating inner strength and fortitude. “The Obstacle is the Way” underscores the value of developing resilience and an unshakable mindset. By focusing on what is within our control and letting go of what isn’t, we build a foundation of mental toughness.
