Meet Deja Craft

We recently connected with Deja Craft and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Deja, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I’d have to say my hometown instilled a lot of the “hustle” mentality in me, New Orleans is one of those places where you make it out or you don’t and then you’re kind of stuck. My mother as well, she raised two children as a single mother in a small city, she didn’t always have the answers but she always made a way. I always felt that if she could do it with all of the hurdles and obstacles that were thrown at her then I knew I could. I work hard because my support system is so strong and I want them to know that all of the love and support they poured into me meant something.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a software and systems engineer. I’m also a writer and published my first Ebook last year to assist others on their journey through the tech industry, specifically minorities. I’d love to see more women and people of color in this field and I think it’s such an intimidating field to navigate sometimes, but also one of the most rewarding.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Tenacity for sure, determination and a willingness to learn, you have to be okay with knowing that you do not know everything, you have to be a sponge and soak up as much knowledge as you can. Do as much research as possible on any career field, hobby, or business you may be interested in starting. Don’t jump into something blindly because it sounds good or looks good, have a passion for any field you go into and you’ll do fine. I had to learn that the hard way, but I forged my own path and it worked out.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The Alchemist! It helped me tremendously in Understanding that the journey is just as important as the destination. This was something that was extremely hard for me to accept, but that book was truly valuable and it resonated with me so much, I’d recommend that book to anyone on any stage of their journey.
