Meet Martelle Graham

We recently connected with Martelle Graham and have shared our conversation below.

Martelle, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I think the real question is, Can one truly overcome imposter syndrome? I still find myself struggling with it today, and I believe that’s perfectly normal. It’s just a part of the journey. Sometimes I’ll look at a piece of art I’ve created and be amazed by it. I’ll ask myself, “Did I really do this?” This is especially true when there are no footsteps to follow, and I’m the first artist in my family. It’s like navigating uncharted waters, with a lot of trial and error, but also successes. So, how do I overcome imposter syndrome? I’ve learned to embrace it.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I unexpectedly became a Full-Time Artist. I never imagined that I would become a full-time artist, but here I am. Like many other artists, I have faced struggles with anxiety and depression. However, drawing and doodling became my outlet for coping with those feelings. Eventually, I mustered the courage to share my work on social media, and the rest is history.

My primary focus as an artist is to connect with as many people as possible and inspire them in multiple ways. My artwork revolves around spiritualism, self-awareness, self-love, and healing from trauma. I portray my personal journeys and experiences in my art, hoping to show others that they are not alone. I aspire to inspire the uninspired.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The most impactful information I received about social media in my career is that it’s fake. Nothing is really as it seems. The creator shares what they want you to see.

It’s essential to surround ourselves with people who are smarter than us and are in the same place we aspire to be, especially when it comes to our algorithm. We should never compare ourselves to others, as comparison is the thief of joy.

For those who are starting their journey, my advice is to go with the flow and find what works best for you. Although our end goals may be similar, the journey is unique to each individual. What works for someone else may not work for you, so it’s crucial to avoid comparing yourself to others and not give up on yourself. If you’re a fan of my content, you know that I have never given up on myself and will never do so. Remember, there is room for everyone to excel in their respective fields.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
I am incredibly grateful for my parents and their unwavering support. Their greatest contribution to my life has been their belief in me and their willingness to help me in any way possible, whether it be as a babysitter, client or parent. Their support has taken many forms, and I am grateful for all of them. For those of us who have chosen a non-traditional career path, it can be discouraging when we don’t receive the support we expect. However, it’s important to remember that our loved ones mean well. They only want to see us succeed and avoid any hardships. We are all navigating uncharted territory, and there is no blueprint for success. But remember, you chose this career path for a reason. The universe revealed its vision to you and only you. So, it’s okay if others don’t understand why you chose it. Stay true to your vision and keep pushing forward.
