We recently connected with Allison Landa and have shared our conversation below.
Allison, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
My purpose found me. I’ve always written; I will always write. But even writing that makes me realize it’s too easy an answer. I’ve pounded the pavement looking for a place for my purpose — where will my writing touch the most people? For a long time I worked to produce and publish BEARDED LADY, my memoir. Now it’s time for new struggles — producing and publishing other books!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I write books and work with others to achieve their literary dreams. I also do freelance marketing copy — right now I’m working on a commercial real estate investment guide for a major firm. No matter what I’m doing, I want to know that it matters, whether it’s touching people, helping them achieve their own goals, or just plain entertaining a reading audience.
I’m always looking for new opportunities to use my words to the best effect! If you have a great project, I’d love to hear about it.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Persistence, strategy, and willing foolishness. The first two are self-explanatory, but hear me out on the third. Sometimes you have to be a willing fool to believe your dream will come true in the face of all that is logical — because if you are persistent and strategic, it will.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Ignored my work. I’m serious. I’m super oppositional and if they pressed me to write, I never would. By figuratively turning their backs on what I do, they spurred me to work ever harder to achieve my dreams.
