Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shalita Shantae . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shalita Shantae , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I am honored to contribute my perspective to the panel discussion on “Being the only one in the room: I have learned to be effective even when I am the only one in the room that looks like me.” As a Black woman, CEO, and Principal Agent with over a decade of experience in the predominantly white male-dominated financial services industry, I believe my journey holds valuable insights.
Navigating the intricacies of the financial services industry, particularly in insurance and investments, has been both challenging and rewarding. The lack of diversity in leadership roles, with only 4% representing African Americans, underscores the importance of sharing experiences and strategies for success.
Surviving and thriving in such an environment required a strategic approach. While many agents prioritize product training, I focused on understanding the business side of the industry. By asking the right questions and applying negotiation skills inherited from my grandmother, I not only survived but thrived.
Creating a legacy business demands methodical, intentional steps. My advice to aspiring entrepreneurs in the insurance field is to shift focus from the allure of potential earnings to understanding the intricacies of the business first, rather than merely selling products. Those who neglect the business side may find themselves starting over or, worse, contemplating quitting.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My lowest point in the industry occurred during my onboarding with a reputable international company, where a false pretense led to a disheartening revelation. Despite countless hours, personal investments, and sponsored lunches, I discovered that my earnings for the year amounted to a mere $26,000. This experience highlighted the lack of business transparency and the vulnerability of agents, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds.
As the youngest Black person in my earlier career stages and now as the only Black woman in a leadership role, I’ve learned to navigate and succeed in an industry not initially designed for someone like me. One unique aspect of the financial services field is the potential to inherit a book of business, yet it’s disheartening to see a lack of inheritors who mirror my own identity.
The solution, Financial WakeUP elevators is a collective of professionals & small business owners that started in December 2023 with a core mission to debunk what proposed as Financial Literacy and reshape what is Financial Empowerment
This Is NOT Financial Literacy…We Do Financial Empowerment
We have discovered that the majority of Americans
1) Don’t know how financial services actually works
2) Don’t know how to use what is available
3) Are being taken advantage of because of it
We have been meeting weekly every Sunday with a small core group to solve these problems. We have decided now is the time to open up our doors to more like-minded people who don’t care about learning how to “read” their financial circumstances but are ready to take Financial Action.
.
.***We have Limited Access for Maximum Impact***
We keep our gatherings exclusive to ensure focused, high-quality interactions and discussions.
All of our activities lead to the 1st Financial WakeUP, a yearly two-day conference scheduled to be held July 2024. Tickets go on Sale in April 2024
Not to mention, two book releases are Fastly approaching. Must follow my socials to stay up to date with current updates.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey, I believe the three pivotal elements that significantly influenced my path were:
Business Acumen: I inherited a valuable understanding of business dynamics from my father and grandmother early in life. This foundation has been instrumental in helping me discern and prioritize essential functions within any business.
Faith and Confidence: My relationship with God and adherence to principles of faith have provided a steadfast anchor. This, combined with my ability to make decisions with confidence, has been crucial during challenging moments, guiding me through uncertainties.
Sales Mode and Psychology: One critical transition I made was moving from customer service to sales mode. Learning the psychology of sales has empowered me to guide individuals towards decisions that align with their goals, while also ensuring financial success. Many struggle in this industry due to hesitancy in making this shift. To prosper, individuals must be willing to step out of their comfort zones.
For those embarking on their journey, my advice is:
Develop Business Acumen: Pay attention to the critical functions within any business. Understanding the broader picture enables more informed and strategic decision-making.
Embrace Faith and Confidence: Trust in your abilities and maintain a strong foundation. Having faith in your journey and making decisions with confidence can be a powerful combination during challenging times.
Master Sales Mode and Psychology: Transition from a customer service mindset to sales mode. Learn the psychology of sales to guide people effectively, helping them achieve their goals while securing your own success. Stepping out of your comfort zone is crucial in excelling in this dynamic industry.
Remember, success often lies just beyond the borders of familiarity, so be bold in your endeavors and open to growth.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
My love has always been with small business owners. They can be hands-on shaping the community and giving opportunities to young people on a more personable and empathetic level. Our Financial WakeUP events allow for small business to be more visible and allows corporations with a similar mission/purpose like MPG to be more impactful. The Millionaire Portfolio Group was established around the core principles that allow for organizations, business owners & professionals to obtain the freedom that allows us all to be and build better lives, better families, better communities, and a better world for us all.
