Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Nys Sanchez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Nys, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Finding my purpose didn’t present itself overnight but in fact overtime. From a background in competitive amateur motocross racing to experiencing heartache to discovering and finding my truest self is how my purpose and passion came to the surface as not only a photographer but a photographer that specializes in black and white photography. My personal journey as a transgender man and living my best authentic life as I can has also brought on a new light as a black and white photographer that I believe people deserve to see, feel and know. I stop time. I capture the most authentic beauty that exists. Creating a safe space as not only a photographer but as a friend too. I’m reminded of my purpose every moment I’m behind that lens. When it ignites this joy within myself and the person or people I’m capturing. That’s how I know that this is what I’m here for.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Nys Sanchez, I currently reside along the Texas coast. I love surfing, movies and going on adventures. I suppose you can guess by now what I’m doing when I’m not on an on-location photoshoot, haha. My journey as a photographer began early on when I was a kid. When the camera chose me. I use to race competitively in motocross and travel a lot with my family, going on many adventures. Cameras were always a part of the luggage. After my “early retirement” in motocross and focusing more on my mental health in my early adulthood, life began to hurt but also come together. I found myself. My real self. “Coming out” is outdated so, I “reintroduced” myself to the world as me – a transgender man. My oh my did many doors I didn’t know existed opened the moment I began living for myself and seeing myself come together as the man I always knew I was. Throughout all those years, I remember grabbing my camera and documenting the world around me including myself and my transition. This was when the photographer in me you know now was born, and even more when I began capturing people. It was like the world stopped every time I was behind the lens looking through this new lens of life. It was powerful. Fast-forward to now as a black and white photographer with many collaborations under my belt with non-profit organizations, fashion models, artists and many more to come. My dream, vision and what I’m professionally focused on is to continue doing just that, expand and to one day be represented by an agency as the photographer I am, shoot for magazines, behind-the-scenes on film sets, at film awards and film festivals, to continue giving back to communities that hold my heart and being a role model for our future, for our trans youth, and maybe even dip into modeling. Living outside the box is where you want to be and I look forward to doing that and continuing to spread my light.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Honestly, the number one and only quality and advice really I have to say is to be your truest self. Remaining true and listening to your heart will always take you to where you’re meant to be. Even when the world is against you, things are always coming together. When I collaborate with people, I create a safe space and it’s the first thing I like to tell them and anyone I come across on this journey. It brings a sense of hope and home all in one.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m looking to partner or collaborate with who I like to call, “barrier-breakers”. Artists, actors, models, musicians, activists, public figures, celebrities, etc who are in the LGBTQ+ community or allies of the LBGTQ+ community, who are literally breaking barriers and paving that beautiful path of hope for our future and how we can continue paving that way. For partnerships or collaborations, I can be contacted by my email or my Instagram page.
