Meet Tyshawn Jamison

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tyshawn Jamison a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Tyshawn, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
By embracing my true self, I have gained invaluable wisdom in not allowing my insecurities to overpower me. I have learned to disregard the fear of being overshadowed by others and instead exude unwavering confidence in who I am, where I am heading, and where I am destined to be. It has allowed me to remain fully present, self-aware, and approachable while controlling my actions and thoughts. Recognizing the uniqueness of everyone in this room, I do not boast from a place of arrogance but rather from a position of mindfulness and self-assurance. I understand the importance of effective and meaningful interactions, knowing exactly when to step back or engage. Moreover, I have developed the ability to distinguish between opportunities for personal growth and those that may lead to failure. But, by embracing my true self and recognizing my strengths, I have acquired the skills needed to thrive and succeed.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
i’m an artist located right now in Brooklyn New York but travel a lot from LA to New York. One thing I would like to say is thank you for taking the time to read and to get a little bit more familiar with who I am and what I’m trying to create my name is TYSHAWN JAMISON my artistry name is Typerception along with my production company I started off as an model which turned into acting, and after acting realizing the things that I needed to become an actor, I’ll became a writer and a Director and that happened because I didn’t wanna wait for someone to finally see my potential and book me so I wrote a script three actually and I directed them and me and my amazing creative team shot  them you can find those three films on Amazon prime right now I’m working on trying to get them on Tubi the films are called passion, discord, and deception. You can also find it under my production company, Typerception right now what I’m doing in all honesty, trying to survive when it comes to an artist I don’t believe in the saying fake it you make it or the struggling artist I don’t believe in that because, if I can’t make sure I have a roof over my head and food to eat. I’ll be homeless and hungry so I’m about the reality of things I work two jobs right now and I’m taking a few classes for project management and to further my skills and lighting sound and some of Photography. I want to talk about the fact that I have two days throughout the month off and that’s two Sundays by choice because at this very moment when I’m working on, yes, I’m working on a film called awake and this particular film is to raise a winner for kids who have to take on parenting due to whatever personal reason they have gone on in that household shining light on how they have to pick up that responsibility and become the parent for their siblings i’m super excited about this film but one thing I know is that it takes money and I know that from my three films that was funded all by me. My second job goes to the resources of my film also building my credit and getting out of debt, I sleep 4-6 hours a day but I bet you’re wondering how do I have so much time and do i make  time for myself I do I still go to the gym I still sharpen my skills. Make sure I make time for myself and I still make sure that I check in on myself mentally with my therapist, I will not sit up here on this interview and make it seem like everything is just amazing. I have a good days and bad days like everyone else and I fight with that little voice myself trying to discourage me because we can be our biggest enemys throughout this journey of trying to make something out of nothing, I’ve been distracted I’ve been hurt I’ve been used and I’ve been manipulated and I’ve also done the same, but what is different is I’m taking all the necessarily steps to be the best version of myself and to learn from my mistakes and not hover over them, allowing them to make me stagnated so I can be the best version for my friends and family with no condemnation and be aware and face myself so yes, with all that going on I am still writing brainstorming working on my vision board because my time might be tied up right now because I’m working on something that’s working towards me getting to my film. Its still work to be done there still a script to be written and everything else that comes with filmmaking and trying to better your life. Every mistake that I made from my past three films is noted and documented because back then I didn’t know better, but I’m a make sure that I learnt from those experiences, never let someone make you feel like you’re not doing enough when all they see is the end result don’t feel kind away when you see other peoples projects being birth because guess what they were where you are they Time  just came because they didn’t give up regardless what they faced regardless, what people said, and who didn’t support them as I talk to you I still talk to myself and I’m not perfect but I am aware so I say all this to say I’m a regular black king black man in America that face the obstacles that come with being black on top of being an artist/entrepreneur I consider myself supportive honest loving, I mean come on I’m a Scorpio. If only I could see your face, lol.  I love and honor, and I have a relationship with God. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be as far as I am right now I wouldn’t of went the places that I’ve been experienced the things I have experienced. Always remember God can open any door that no man can shut and as long as you have faith of a mustard seed, you can remove any obstacle in your way but yes, back to my film called awake. I am saving up money right now. I gave it a $10,000 budget for a short film because I need my team, and I want to make sure my team gets paid and they’re comfortable along with the talent, so feel free to donate any little thing that counts. You can email me or find me on Instagram or any social media platform under Typerception. My website is [email protected]. Email [email protected]. I’m really excited to bring this film to life and shed light on the struggles that young individuals face when taking on the responsibility of parenting at a young age. It’s a story that needs to be told and I’m dedicated to making it happen. Despite the challenges, I’m determined to make sure my team is well taken care of and that their talent and hard work are recognized and valued. It’s important to me to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable and supported. I’m grateful for any support I receive, whether it’s financial or just words of encouragement. I believe in the power of community,. I wouldn’t have gone to the places where I’ve and I know that together we can make a difference. Thank you for taking the time to read about my journey and my upcoming film. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to make progress towards bringing “Awake” to the screen.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Invest time in honing your skills and becoming aware of your strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. Embrace the ability to receive direction, advice, and constructive criticism. Learn how to maintain a clear distinction between your professional and personal life. Develop the ability to not take things personally and cultivate self-assurance. Establish boundaries that safeguard your integrity and well-being. For those who are just starting their journey, embrace all of these lessons and more. Prioritize thorough research and avoid making impulsive decisions driven by emotions. Take a moment to pause, breathe, and gather your thoughts. Don’t hesitate to invest in yourself and seize every opportunity for growth that comes your way. Consider shadowing someone or enrolling in relevant classes. If financial constraints arise, don’t be disheartened. Seek alternative resources on platforms like YouTube to strengthen any areas that require improvement. Stay motivated and keep God as your guiding force.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
The first thing I do when I feel overwhelmed, no matter where I am, is to take charge and assert my authority. If I find myself on the streets, and that overwhelming feeling hits me, I quickly remove myself from the environment or situation that’s causing it. I take a brisk walk outside, filling my lungs with deep breaths, as if I’m absorbing healing energy. I hold my head high and pray, connecting with a power greater than myself. I then find solace in meditation, allowing my mind to find its center. To further empower myself, I engage in a vigorous workout or go for a run, feeling the strength coursing through my veins.

But perhaps the most crucial thing I remind myself is that not everything can be fixed or changed in an instant. I recognize that there are situations beyond my control, and rather than fighting against them, I choose to navigate through them. I stay attuned to my emotions, acknowledging how the circumstances make me feel. I refrain from getting caught up in negative emotions, instead focusing on the fact that I possess more control than I realize. Mind over matter, after all.

In moments of intense emotion, it becomes necessary to check the facts and problem-solve. Often, I discover that I’ve shouldered burdens that aren’t my own, leading to overwhelming feelings. By taking control of my own identity and authority, I can distinguish between what belongs to me and what’s been imposed upon me. This realization empowers and liberates me, reducing the weight of the world on my shoulders.

I refuse to allow societal pressures or others’ expectations to diminish my worth. I am confident in who I am and who I am becoming. I find validation in my relationship with a higher power, knowing that their opinion is the only one that truly matters. I walk with the assurance of someone who knows their worth, unshaken by the opinions of others.
