Meet Tysheona Mickens

We recently connected with Tysheona Mickens and have shared our conversation below.

Tysheona , so great to have you on the platform and excited to have you share your wisdom with our community today. Communication skills often play a powerful role in our ability to be effective and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your communication skills.
In my childhood, I struggled with dyslexia, a speech disorder that challenged my communication skills. Throughout elementary school, my mom enrolled me in speech classes to improve my interaction with peers since she noticed I was not too fond of public speaking engagements. As I grew older, I encouraged friends and family to help correct my words If I misspoke. Additionally, I delved into reading extensively, spoke slowly to understand myself, and practiced encouragement with my podcast, “Dear Me: I.AM.ME”.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As the creator and owner of Rae Louis. Our brand is all about crafting unique looks that blend vintage and modern styles, infused with innovation, authenticity, and a touch of quirky streetwear. I envisioned an apparel brand that’s not just stylish but sustainable, focusing on recyclable clothing; since 70% of textiles are being thrown in landfills. We aim to boost confidence from the inside and look stunning on the outside while elevating everyday fashion. The most thrilling part of building this brand is navigating through emotions, staying resilient, and pursuing your passion despite challenges- it’s a constant test of dedication. We will be dropping our first Rae Louis collection this summer, as well as new episodes of Dear Me: I.AM.ME.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Honestly, the top qualities I’ve sharpened and continue to apply are active listening, responding with empathy, and persistence. When interacting with diverse individuals who guide their own lives, being an active listener and showing empathy are crucial qualities that not everyone possesses. These skills unlock the door to understanding people’s stories and making a positive impact in every community you encounter. Each day is a learning curve, you’ll have to guide your path and stay open-minded to everything and everyone. In any industry, you’ll face a lot of “no’s” but with persistence and active listening, success is achievable, especially when coupled with empathy towards everyone you encounter. The goal is to improve every day and give 100% even when you slacking.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Being a mix of introvert and extrovert, I aim to join forces with like-minded, uplifting, and positive creators and business-oriented individuals who can complement my strengths and fill in the areas where I may fall short.
