We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tong Luo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tong below.
Tong, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I have always realized that the prerequisite for finding a purpose is to know what you want deep within yourself. My purpose has been sought through work and practice, constantly evolving. I started in the field of film art, gained experience in various film and television productions, and gradually discovered my unique understanding of visuals. Consequently, I began learning editing and directing, step by step narrating my own stories and ideas, which led to further development, helping me identify my strengths and talents.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a film editor, director, producer, and art director with nearly 6 years of experience in the film and television industry. I have been involved in numerous Chinese films and TV dramas. What excites me the most about this job is the ample creative space to express my own ideas. I have the opportunity to visualize the stories I write, employing various editing techniques to present materials in different ways to the audience, offering them unique viewing experiences. Observing the audience’s emotional changes is a fascinating aspect, testing not only their reception of your work but also providing a continuous learning and improvement process.
I once had my own film and television studio called RKLG, where we served various brands and institutions, producing brand promotional videos and narrative short films. Our works have been selected for major film festivals and have received numerous awards. For me, the role of an editor is crucial as it introduced me to the film and television industry, setting me apart from competitors with my unique ideas and editing mindset. The appreciation of my work by directors and audiences has strengthened my commitment to innovation and pursuit in this path.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back at my journey in the film and television industry, three qualities that have been most impactful are creativity, adaptability, and a deep understanding of visual storytelling. The ability to bring unique and innovative ideas to life has allowed me to carve a distinctive path in the industry. Adaptability has been crucial in navigating the ever-evolving nature of the field, especially as I transitioned from film art to editing, directing, and producing. A profound understanding of visual storytelling, honed through years of experience, has been instrumental in crafting narratives that resonate with audiences. My advice for individuals early in their journey is to foster creativity by constantly seeking inspiration, embrace adaptability as the industry evolves, and invest time in gaining a comprehensive understanding of visual storytelling techniques. Continuous learning, hands-on experience, and a willingness to embrace change will undoubtedly contribute to their growth and success in this dynamic field.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m very eager to have the opportunity to collaborate with many talented peers, including renowned directors and singers. I have a strong passion for music videos, and my works often lean towards the integration of film and music. For me, collaborating with niche singers and independent directors to create visually compelling pieces is especially exciting. Additionally, partnering with visual effects artists to incorporate elements of virtual reality and technology into my work would be the ideal way to enhance the creative process.
If I have the opportunity to introduce myself to them, I would provide my social media handle “tong_rklg” for further connection, and we can also communicate directly via email. I am very excited about the prospect of such opportunities and collaborations.
