We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lalania Simone a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lalania, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I went to Catholic school for many years and was steeped in Catholic tradition from a young age. Though I loved the spirituality and the ritual and traditional aspects, something was amiss. I couldn’t understand my role as a female within the religion, and I didn’t understand why I was considered a sinner, even though I was very young.
At age 20 I discovered a new spirituality, I began to have a self-directed spiritual awareness that was unfolding in my life. I realized that becoming an awakened person was my purpose, becoming conscious in my day to day life.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a self-trained creative. I started drawing and painting at a young age, but was also a lover of crafts and fiber arts. I trained as a fashion designer for some years, and moved to NY to become a fashion designer. I had some great experiences there, and returned to Denver to open a boutique of my own. I have opened several businesses over the years, with different levels of success. The biggest success I have had thus far is pairing my spiritual purpose with business, first with my subscription box (which I sold a few years ago), and now with my store and my tarot and oracle decks.
I am the Co-owner of a brick-n-mortar metaphysical shop called Alchemy Ritual Goods, and the creator of an oracle deck (the Oracle of Awakening) and two tarot decks (Tarot of the Cosmic Seed, the Wise Earth Medicine Tarot). I love my work, as it is constantly creative. In our shop I am curating a beautiful sacred space with spiritual tools and goods. I talk with people who are going through life and need support and healing, and have come to us to help. It is incredibly fulfilling work. When I am not in the shop I am working on making jewelry for the shop, or am creating imagery for my decks. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have a creative daily life.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three things that have been most impactful are ~honing my skills, I am a student of life and am always learning new skills and looking to improve. Find something you love and keep getting better at it.
~mapping my goals and steps. I decide what the goal is, and map the most obvious next steps from where I am now, and then take action.
~willingness to take risks. Every time I have started a business there has been some level of risk, be it time or money. You have to be willing to lose when you try something new.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
When I was ready to open my first boutique, I unexpectedly found out I was pregnant. I decided to move forward with the business and my mom paid the rent for my apt for quite awhile. I am so grateful for that. She was not a woman of means, she was a single parent who worked hard, and had enough to pay the bills and a little extra to put away. It moves me to tears when I think of her sacrifice.
