We were lucky to catch up with Darrin Pryor recently and have shared our conversation below.
Darrin, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
Thank you for the question. Honestly, I truly feel that I was born with a very giving and generous spirit, I’ve always had a great heart when dealing with people. As I got older though, I did have to learn that having a good heart is a gift and a curse. Every day I choose to be a great person because it’s so many angry and bitter people in the world and its very unfortunate. Having a welcoming presence or being generous to a person can really have a major impact in someones day. It makes me feel good to make someone else feel good. I always tell my friends that you never know what a person is going through and a simple hello can change their whole day. You can ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you that I am a very altruistic individual.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As I currently work full time within the CyberSecurity world of Information Technology , I am also working to expand my business in my downtime. Outside of my 9-5 job, I am a Photographer. I started my business in 2022 because I wanted to start working towards my passion outside of work. Working for someone is cool and pays the bills ; however, it’s nothing like doing something you love and sharing that love with others. My business name is hDPixelz LLC. My business is currently operating as a Photography business that will later transition into offering other services like graphic design, videography, and website design. Currently, the graphic design division is rolling out within the next few months. I am based in Houston, TX. Event Photography, Studio/Portrait Photography, Engagement/Wedding Photography, Environmental Photography, Commercial Photography, and etc. The intended goal is to always be accessible to every potential customer that I may encounter. As I grow my business, I have limited resources ; however, I make it work. Even though my apartment is my home studio, I am able to still create a creative atmosphere for my client to meet their needs.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three factors that played a part in my journey was acquiring knowledge from the website Udemy, networking with my fellow peers for exposure and knowledge, and consistency.
Udemy is a website that hosts classes on many topics ranging for catering to becoming a engineer at a company. The online self-paced classes are usually on sale and have major deals. My graphic design and photography classes are listed with the original price of $120+, but I usually catch a sell where the courses are literally $12. Once you are enrolled in a course, you will have lifetime access to course work, real world examples, publications, a community of like-minded people, and an instructor teaching the course.
Networking with your fellow peers who are already in the desired field that you are wanting to transition into and networking with people who may be interested joining the field that you are already in. Sharing and gaining knowledge with others play a major role when growing your business. Networking can open many doors for your and your business. Also, do not gatekeep any information from people. There is enough space for many people to work together and to make additional money to live. I never want to be successful and be alone.
Lastly, being consistent will take you a very long way. Life is a marathon and not a race. I tell people that you do not have to have everything all at once. You also do not have to spend 10 hours a day on a tasks. As long as you a making an effort to be better at your craft day by day, you will be able to see your growth and change. Give yourself flowers, show yourself grace, love the process, and embrace your journey. There is no time limit to achieve any goal.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
I do not have an ideal client. All of my clients thus far have requested different things to make their event and photo session special and unique to them. Every customer that I book nowadays tends to challenge me to reach new heights. As I continue to grow, I am learning from every client to add a new artistic aesthetic to their photos. Artistic aesthetics would be adding fire to the photos for special effects, turning furniture into props to achieve different looks, and designing different design sets for customer so their photos are not the same as other clients. It has been a joy to bring my visions to life.
