We were lucky to catch up with Teren Robinson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Teren, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Honestly, I just became MYSELF. I did, and wore things that made me happy or that made me feel most confident. Fashion, and putting looks together make me feel most at peace and happy when I walk out of the house. For example, I set a playlist and set a vibe and a feeling for myself before I even pick out what I am going to put on. Having a feeling for yourself, when putting a look together, will help. How do I want to feel today? Who do I want to be? What do I want others to feel when they see me? These are all questions I ask myself when putting a look together. It’s like a science in a way, even down to the fragrance(s) that I put on. Everything has to flow and mesh seamlessly. and when it does, I feel like BEYONCÉ.
How you dress is a big reflection of you, and it is one of the first impressions people get from you before even speaking. So, if I have on a look that makes me look like i own the room, then that how I will feel, and act haha sounds a little crazy, maybe, but it sure works. Even if you already feel as if you are on top of the world, if you do not feel confident in how you look, it will read to others. Fashion is EVERYTHING to me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Teren “Teddy Stylez” Robinson. Some people reading this may already know me, but, for those who don’t, proceed with caution, haha. Just kidding!! I don’t bite…. Sometimes.
I am an extraterrestrial from Compton, California. I say extraterrestrial because I am different from most people, I am a “weirdo”, an outcast even, and I own every bit of it. I recently finished my studies at Los Angeles Trade Technical College, obtaining my AA in Fashion design, FINALLY!!! Ahhh it feels so poetic to be finished with school, after such a long journey. I can finally breathe again. I am a fashion designer, mostly, I wear so many other hats but my heart is in fashion.
Some designers are specialty designers: Menswear, Womenswear, Kids, Plus Sized, Etc. When people ask me, I just say I am a designer. I don’t want to be put into a box of being subject to designing, or being considered to have a specialty in one or two specific categories of fashion. Fashion does not have a gender, color or size bracket to me. Everyone deserves to look just as good as they feel on the inside, whether they are a man, woman, plus-sized, or of a smaller build. I DESIGN LOOKS for all.
Right now, I am two months out of school and I am working on starting my brand officially!!! YAY ME!!! Cannot give any deets on the name just yet, that’s just something you will have find out once I drop it publicly.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The 3 qualities I feel were most impactful for me these past couple of years were, Persistence, “Standing on Business” (as the people say), and not forgetting WHO I AM and WHY I am doing what I am doing.
For anyone early in their journey, JUST DO NOT GIVE UP ON YOURSELF. You are literally your biggest cheerleader and if no one else believes in you, YOU HAVE TO.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Being overwhelmed is a part of the game. You just honestly have to realize that what you are being overwhelmed with is small and that you are going through this for a reason that is bigger than yourself. There is always something great at the end of the dark tunnel, even if your feel like that tunnel is never-ending. That just means the payoff will be something you didn’t even know you were ready for.
Nothing in life ever comes easy and if it does, then I don’t want any parts of it. If it was that easy for me to get it, it will be just as easy for the next person and that person can easily take your spot at the table.
