Meet Lia Kim

We recently connected with Lia Kim and have shared our conversation below.

Lia , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
As a designer and illustrator, maintaining my creativity is essential for producing impactful work. Firstly, I proactively seek inspiration by examining the work of other designers and illustrators currently active in the field. Rather than comparing my designs to theirs, I focus on gaining industry insights, refreshing my perspective, and staying informed about market trends. I often create digital inspiration boards to compile images, videos, and design elements that serve as a constant source of motivation.

Secondly, I keep my curiosity by exploring a diverse range of art forms, styles, and trends. Attending art exhibitions, watching films, and immersing myself in various creative disciplines allows me to broaden my perspective and incorporate fresh ideas into my work.

Lastly, I embrace the courage to experiment with new techniques and unconventional ideas. By pushing the boundaries and trying different approaches, I open myself up to unexpected and exciting results. This willingness to explore uncharted territories contributes to the evolution of my creative process and keeps my work dynamic and innovative.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Lia Kim, and I specialize in motion design and illustration, bringing ideas to life through dynamic animations and designs. I have had the privilege of working with various studios and agencies in NYC. My focus is on delivering innovative and high-quality motion graphics that resonate with clients.

Growing up, my interest in the design industry was heavily influenced by my mother, who is a designer. After participating in a painting exhibition in South Korea, my personal journey began, leading to numerous experiences in the US that have shaped my viewpoint and infused life into my animations. By seamlessly combining designs with motion graphic techniques, I create art that captivates the eye and harmoniously blends the two great cultural traditions.

This fusion is evident in my animations, which go beyond being mere visual spectacles to capture life’s fleeting moments. What excites me is the transformation of concepts into captivating experiences, where creativity meets technical skills. I am excited about the prospect of further exploration and collaboration, as every new project becomes a canvas for storytelling and innovation.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, two qualities that have played a pivotal role are creativity, and adaptability. Creativity has been the driving force behind my work, allowing me to conceptualize and execute unique ideas that resonate with audiences. For those at the early stages of their journey, I recommend nurturing creativity by exploring various art forms, observing the world around them, and remaining open to unconventional ideas.

Adaptability has been a cornerstone of my success in the ever-evolving design industry. Embracing change and staying open to new trends and technologies has enabled me to remain relevant and innovative. To those starting their journey, I suggest fostering adaptability by being open to learning, staying curious, and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth.

To those embarking on their own paths, I encourage a balanced approach that integrates these qualities, fostering a mindset of continuous learning, and openness to change.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
In the past 12 months, I’ve undergone substantial personal and professional growth. Previously, my work was predominantly within motion graphic studios, specifically in advertising, where I became accustomed to the studio environment. However, the last year brought forth an exciting opportunity when I had the honor of contributing to the design of the Samsung Global Website for the Galaxy Fold 2023 series at the agency ‘Barbarian.’ This experience marked a notable departure from my usual comfort zone, enabling me to adapt to a new industry and acquire valuable knowledge and skills.

Moreover, my time at ‘FiveStone’ has provided insights into the importance of client relationships and their crucial role in the success of a studio. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of effective communication with clients, learning how to navigate these relationships more efficiently for the overall success of both the studio and the projects undertaken.
