Meet Lynn Abaté-Johnson

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lynn Abaté-Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Lynn, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
This is something I have been proud of, even when I was younger and did not have the confidence or experience that I do today. I always thought that my strong work ethic came from a couple of somewhat stereotypical paths.
One was being born and partially-raised in the Midwest (Detroit, Michigan).
The other, which I know is the overarching factor, is that my grandfather was an immigrant (actually grandparents on both sides, different origin countries & cultures) who built a business empire in the Detroit area. Everyone in the family worked in some capacity.
I started working, customer-facing, at age nine. I embraced the work because it was fun.

Today, I still embrace work as play. Even when it can seem like drudgery, or doing things I don’t want to do, I can usually make a “game” out of it.

There’s a reason why “gamification” is such a powerful tool in marketing and building businesses.

Humans need to be stimulated, and for me, since I started working, through to this day, I find work that I can enjoy, even when I’m on a high learning curve.

My work ethic is now fostered by the communities I build. I tend to attract others who “get me” and want to join in with whatever I’m working on. We make it fun, and that makes it sustainable.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I LOVE to roller skate! I do that at the beach in Oceanside, California, where I live.

I LOVE to lend my skills and expertise to passion projects and the passionate people who lead them.
I have done this with many organizations over the years, and currently, I’m involved with one called Save Oceanside Sand (sosOceanside.com).

I LOVE to teach, train, and consult with conscious brands, collaborative teams and entrepreneurs about how to leverage digital and off line channels to spread good news that can make a positive impact on the lives of the customers and clients they touch.
I do this through 1:1 projects, mentorship, and courses like the one I created called #ShowUpYOU.
As a multiple-published author, I love to work with budding writers and authors who are unsure of themselves at first. I work with them to blossom and grow into the storytellers they are.

I BELIEVE that we all have stories to tell that can impact our world, generating connections that have ripple effects over generations.

I BELIEVE that learning to use our voices individually and collectively for the highest good is a key to encouraging others to do the same.

I BELIEVE that business transformation is generated by True Community, intentionally built at scale, globally, naturally, organically. I BELIEVE that this can be accomplished through resonance, cultural alignment and flow, as opposed to hustle and grind.

I BELIEVE that we each have a purpose that is tied to our values and the systems we are aligned with. I BELIEVE that to be successful in whatever arena we are choosing, it’s crucial to first identify WHO we are and what our values and purpose are.

I BELIEVE that we can only help heal our world to the extent that we do the inner work and begin to heal ourselves, from the inside-out, holistically.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I think that some of the dysfunctional ways of being in my family have actually given way to where I am today, which is that I became curious about HOW i functioned, and didn’t function. What qualities caused my nervous system to become “trashed”, and how I have learned to navigate my life and circumstances that arise in new and different ways today.

For example, I adopted a very “male” quality early on – compartmentalizing.
While I became an “expert” at shoving my emotions and personal desires aside, while diving head first into challenges, I also ignored my own needs. I ignored my health, including nutrition and sleep. I packed on 60+ extra pounds and felt like shit most of the time. And yet, I pushed through and became successful at anything I was involved in.

Fast forward to now, i have two International bestselling books. I have been interviewed more times than I can count. I have been able to identify how I let my SELF go, and circled back to find HER – that vibrant, healthy being who is ALSO capable of tackling almost anything, and winning (or learning a lot)!

It’s as if I’ve been able to learn and UNlearn at the same time, bringing old skills into a new way of BEING. Still powerful, and also open-hearted. Still tenacious, and also listening to my body, mind, and spirit more keenly than ever before.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is usually attracted to me by my communication style (direct and welcoming). I purposely show up exactly as I am when I create content to share on digital channels.

I LOVE working with people who have an understanding and respect for the things that they do not “know”, and, like me, are extremely curious about life and what makes them – and others – “tick”.

The study of being human has always fascinated me. I LOVE people who like to “play” in the realm of what’s possible, especially knowing that the answers are not readily available.

I LOVE a challenge, and I also love to create systems and structures that make life easier for all, starting with my clients and rippling out to their customers and clients.

Bring on the conscious brands, collaborative teams, and individual or solo-preneurs who believe in True Community building. I teach, train, and consult on how to BE and do that in everyday life.
