Meet Rami Abushhab

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rami Abushhab a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Rami, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I 100% get my resilience from being Palestinian, my entire people are rooted in resilience. I don’t think anyone would disagree with the fact that Palestinians are the most resilient people in the world. I see what my family goes through back home and how they are able to not only survive, but thrive and that inspires me. It’s impossible to give up when the attribute of continuing through adversity is embedded in me. It is part of my DNA.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an actor and standup comedian, I’ve actually just put together a new hour of comedy and am taking it on the road for my first solo tour! I’m really excited about this as it’s something I put my whole heart and soul into. My piece is called “Let’s Talk About it” where I navigate the state of the world today through my eyes.

As an artist, I’ve never felt more purposeful with my work than I do now. As a comedian, I have a duty to be funny but as a Palestinian, I have a duty to educate and spread the truth. I think that mixing the two together makes for very beautiful standup comedy.

I actually heard Mo Amer say on a podcast once that the best comedy makes you laugh and think and this is exactly what I aim to do with my work. I want to make people laugh and then stop and think about the truth in between the lines of the jokes. My main goal with my new standup is to make people feel something, I pray that when someone leaves my show they leave with a feeling. I’m not sure what that feeling is, but I just want them to feel moved. I hope I can do that.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I’m still very much on my journey but I will list three qualities I believe will get you far in whatever it is you’re doing!

1. Resilience- of course we already discussed this but it’s very important to be able to endure whatever it is life throws at you, we must be able to find a way to keep going.

2. Relentless- this and resilience I believe go hand in hand as being relentless means never giving up, it means finding a way no matter what. Whatever journey you’re on, whatever you’re pursuing, you have to be relentless at it.

3. Gratitude- you must be grateful. Always says Alhamdullilah. Wherever you’re at in your journey, be grateful! Be aware of how far you’ve come and be confident that you could take it even further. Remember, you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be, do NOT compare yourself to others. Your blessings are your blessings and their blessings are their blessings. Be grateful.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
Although it isn’t said much, my parents showed me what love is. My father showed me how to care and he showed me what resilience is. Time and time again, life hit Baba hard but he didn’t give up. He takes the hits and he keeps going, he fights back and that is powerful. Seeing him work so hard day after day is so inspiring and I am forever grateful.
