Meet Keturah Wilson

We were lucky to catch up with Keturah Wilson recently and have shared our conversation below.

Keturah, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I think my resilience comes from always being underestimated and looked at as if I was less than. People always kind of put me on the back burner, as if I was incompetent and when I started to realize that pattern, I knew I had to change. So when I faced any difficult situation I pushed myself through it. I pushed myself through rejections, negativity, people’s opinions of me, and anything that said I couldn’t or wasn’t good enough. Because I knew I was more than what people made me out to be and in order to prove that to myself, I had no choice but to be resilient.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Hello My name is Keturah and I am a Photographer. Photography came into my life at a difficult time and it turned into a therapeutic journey. It helped me overcome the fear of doing things on my own. It really made me more independent and confident, not just as a person but as an artist. I love all types of photography, but I specialize in fashion/ editorial photography, and product photography. The most exciting thing about photography is being able to create visual art. It’s so amazing what you can accomplish with a little light, a camera, and a unique pose. I always try to push the limits on how creative I can get everytime I shoot a session. It’s beautiful to see what kind of story your images will tell once you click that button.

Because I enjoy photography so much, I recently decided to dive more into posing in order to create more artistic images. Last year I taught my first posing class and some of the images were submitted to magazines. It was such an amazing feeling and the class was a huge success, so we do have plans on do another class in the future.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most important things that were impactful on this journey are mentorship, Studying, and knowing how to market your business.

If you are just starting off with photography, it’s always great to have a mentor who can help you with hands on training. My mentor was amazing and she taught me so many things that I still use today.

Studying is always a must in anything you do. Photography is constantly changing, especially when it comes to the equipment we use. So it’s important to always study and keep up with how the industry is changing.

And lastly, knowing how to market your business. I think I struggled with that the most and learning it took me through a lot of lessons. You want to get your content and business out there, but you have to know what your target audience likes and wants when it comes to marketing. I tell people all the time, learn how to market yourself on and off social media. If you’re marketing on social media, learn the algorithm, times to post, and how to use ads. If your marketing off social look up different ways to promote yourself in your community by posting flyers, giving out business cards, billboards, etc. there’s so many ways to market yourself.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes, I’m always looking for people to collaborate with. There are so many talented people out that who can help contribute to what I do. It always a blessing to be able to create with other talented individuals.

I’m always looking for Models, make up artists, stylists, fashion designers, Brands, businesses and content creators. I also love connecting with other photographers on projects.
