Meet Maurice Carthon

We recently connected with Maurice Carthon and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Maurice, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I would say I get my resilience from my moms. When you watch someone fight Cancer and beat it twice, what’s “can’t?” My mom said she can’t give up on me and my siblings and she kept her promise as long as she could. Witnessing that type of strength makes you unstoppable.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Right now, my professional career is the most important thing to me. Carthon Studios is a brand that I’ve built with my business partner and over the last few months we’ve expanded the brand to be more than just a photo/film studio. We’re taking things from just a studio space to actual tangible creations. We’ve added Production Artist, Actor, Designer, Model and Art to our resumes. So now you can book our photo studio for all things film and photography but we’re also in the process of creating movies, apparel, paintings, editorial shoots, and digital content to really help our brand explode into the real Creative Hub that it is. We hope to one day move the studio to a warehouse space where all branches of our brand can live and thrive.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would say being observant, resilient and disciplined are the most impactful qualities of my journey so far. Being observant of other great artist and art inspires me to want to create those experiences for myself. It’s about watching to learn how to fail so that you can be better at succeeding. Being resilient is important because you never know when your opportunity will arrive. It’s about being mature enough to handle the disappointments that may come with climbing to that next level. Once you get there, being able to look back at how your resilience carried you through makes you feel unstoppable. I’ve had a complicated relationship with discipline, but it’s still very impactful because I’ve always been disciplined enough to get started but would sometimes slide my feet on being disciplined enough to perfect the craft. Luckily, with photography I’ve been working in the industry for so many years it’s my greatest example of how discipline creates magic. But even now I would still like to take a step further and be more disciplined with achieving all my goals in life.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was staying together and playing their role as my parents. I came from a community where two parent households weren’t common, so seeing their unity helped me to have a foundation to build my own.
