Meet Monica Morones

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Monica Morones. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Monica below.

Monica, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I come from a line of women who owned restaurants. My grandmother, my aunts, my mother. I went to work at the young age of 11 and learned the importance of work and have worked every day since. My mother showed me the importance of managing my money at a young age and the sacrifices you have to make to own your own business and what that cost is.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I call myself an artist to generalize. I am a photographer, graphic designer, painter, seamstress, and a musician. I spend my days at a 9-5 in Marketing and Media, getting to use the skills I have with photography and graphic design in my normal day to day job. I also have a photography business and a clothing and art company called The Maniac Girls where I sell my goods online and at festivals and markets. I am in the process of coming up with new utility sling bags for my online store which I will be releasing later on this year.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities I think were most important in my journey were work ethic, humbleness, ambition.

Learn everything you can! It is never a bad thing to have skills under your belt. It is never too late to go back to school or learn a new trade. The best thing I have learned is to make yourself valuable so that people need your skills.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Getting over my own doubt. I overthink which causes turmoil in my judgement about myself and my abilities. I am learning to be delusional about my success regardless about how I feel. I am the worst critic so if I believe in myself, that will be the ultimate hurdle of overcoming my own obstacles. I have been doing breathwork and trying to find peace. I gave up romantic relationships and that has really been helping my mental. Figuring out how to be alone and being ok with loneliness has catapulted my happiness in a way I can’t even describe. It’s also made me have higher requirements and expectations for those I allow into my space which has elevated the company I keep. It’s helping.
