We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tiffany Cohen and Jorge Gutierrez Valera a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tiffany and Jorge, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Our work ethic is influenced by a combination of factors, including cultural background, family values, and personal experiences. In Jorge’s case, his family’s three generations of olive oil production instilled a strong work ethic tied to their agricultural heritage. On the other hand, my family, being immigrants from Jamaica, informed a work ethic shaped by determination, resilience, and the pursuit of opportunities in a new country. Both backgrounds contribute to our unique perspectives on work and dedication in the context of FLOR DE LA JARA.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Tiffany and I are olive oil producers and we aim to bring high-quality and delicious extra virgin olive oil to everyone through our brand, FLOR DE LA JARA. I am a third-generation olive oil producer from Spain and Tiffany is a distinguished figure in medicine with Jamaican heritage. Together, we bring the richness of our backgrounds to create a brand focused on delivering exceptional extra virgin olive oil. FLOR DE LA JARA is crafted with love and uses traditional methods that have been passed down through generations. We harvest the freshest olives by hand during the winter from our olive grove which has belonged to our family for the last three generations. With an unwavering commitment to quality, sustainability, and wellness, we cultivate our trees with the utmost care and devotion.
We currently have our Picual variety available which is rich in flavor, aromatic, and bold. This year, we are pleased that after a bountiful harvest, we will also be able to offer our Arbequina and Cornicabra varieties which will showcase the diverse and flavorful range of our olive oil. We’re thrilled to blend heritage, passion for healthy products, and a commitment to continuing the olive oil legacy in every drop we produce.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on our journey, adaptability, continuous learning, and perseverance have been crucial. It is important to understand that the journey can be filled with setbacks and surprises and as a result, you have to be ready to go along with the changes. If your journey is going one way and you either stop or go on a different path, you won’t get to the end. Continue to be diligent and patient even when it seems as though things aren’t going your way. As long as you never give up you will get to your destination. It may not be a straight line or in the way that you expect but you will eventually get to the end goal.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes, we are actively seeking collaborations with individuals who share a passion for food, such as chefs, food enthusiasts, and restaurants. We are particularly interested in partnering with those who appreciate the value of a healthy, delicious, and versatile product like our olive oil. If you have a love for quality ingredients and a dedication to promoting a positive culinary experience, we would love to explore potential collaborations with you.
