We recently connected with Taylor Gallegos and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Taylor with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I’ve always loved my time making art, and the activity of it. I’ve always been able to lose myself in time with a painting or a drawing, but my work ethic that has taken me into being a professional came from my last side job that I had before going all in with murals, and that was in construction.
I got a job helping a friend on a construction crew to assist me in paying the bills. This job was hard work, it was 40+ hours a week building, and demo-ing hospital rooms. My boss was an old salty badass of a dude, and my friend who was the foreman worked really hard and pushed us as a team, plus we worked from 5 am until 1 pm, so the hours were tough.
That job really prepared me to become the professional muralist that I am today. The way I work, think about projects, deal with weird schedules, etc, all go back to that job.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m an artist, I do murals and paintings on canvas. I’m currently redirecting my efforts with murals toward the world of sports murals. My skill set works well for this, with an artistic background in portraits, figures, and a lifetime of athletic pursuits of my own. Being in Southern California I’ve done a ton of Kobe murals, and I’m aiming at all the various Pro teams I can get connected with. I’m currently in Denver working on a major project for the Colorado Rockies. I’m super excited about this one!
I’m also launching an online course for Creatives to help guide them in finding their success. This will be released in Q2 of this year, and I’m really excited about that. I’ve been working with a few individuals in recent times and they’re all seeing success, which is awesome. Being a Creative in whatever genre you’re in is tough, but with some help. everyone can find their way.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think for me the essence is based in my love of making art, my curiosity toward the process, and the experience. That’s why people are instructed to “Follow your bliss.” If what you do feels positive to you then you’re going to spend enough time at it to get good and figure it all out.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I think it’s better to go all in with your strengths, but keep an open mind to learning what comes up. The reason is that no one thing is ever isolated. If you go all in with one thing, it’s naturally going to connect you to everything surrounding it. For example, if you go in on producing music, you’re going to see that it’d be beneficial to learn the piano. Then from there the piano might lead to the guitar, and the clarinet. And then you’re going to want to add lyrics, so you’ll need to learn to write, and that’ll lead you to poetry, and philosophy, and whatever else. I feel that masters of different crafts all end up being well rounded, they just do it from one particular perspective.
