We were lucky to catch up with Teri Cox recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Teri, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Navigating Success as the Only Black Woman in the room can be both challenging and empowering. Confidence. First I would have to say that it’s crucial to exude confidence in your abilities, ideas and your business mission. Taking control of your own narrative, meaning telling your story that communicates what you do and why it matters. Be prepared to educate your audience about your business and the industry. There may be some people in the room that are not familiar with my field. You must seek out and connect with like-minded individuals who share your value and goals. Building alliances not only provide support but also increases your visibility making it more likely your voice to be heard and respected. Being in this space, it’s an opportunity to encourage open dialogue about diversity and equal representation. Networking with purpose is a must. Attending these events with a strategic mindset. Continue learning, stay informed about the industry trends and take advantage of opportunities for professional development to stay ahead in your industry.
Being the only Black woman in the room provides a unique opportunity to showcase your strength, expertise and resilience. I conclude with your voice is not just important: it’s essential in shaping a more diverse and inclusive future.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

We feel that what sets us apart is the passion and dedication in each piece. Our jewelry isn’t just accessories, it’s a personal touch that resonates with the wearer. One of the most exciting aspect is the thrill of unveiling our latest creation, The Men’s Bracelet Collection. It’s a celebration of style, with each piece telling a story of strength and flair. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would answer this question by saying :
1. Passion & persistence
2. Continuous learning and adaptability
3. Building a brand identity
Advice for those starting their journey:
1. Discover your passion. Take time to explore different aspects of jewelry making. Your passion will be the driving force that sustains you through challenges and keeps you inspired.
2. Be a life long learner. Commit to continuous learning. Attend workshops, enroll in courses and stay informed about the industry.
3. Craft your unique identity. Invest time in defining your brand identity early on. What story do you want your jewelry to tell, what values do you want your brand to embody. Create a distinct visual and narrative identity that sets you apart in the market.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
