Meet Samuel Jackson

We recently connected with Samuel Jackson and have shared our conversation below.

Samuel, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Being a man of religious faith I understand that my conviction must be stronger than my need to please. I was forced to develop and protect my passion for music in an environment where I was the only person I knew pursuing a career in music. I learned that it’s hard for others to see what you are intending to build when they can’t see the blueprint. I have a responsibility to keep building even if I don’t see anyone else doing it.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an eccentric soul artist from Lufkin, Texas. Known for my powerful & passionate lyrics paired with a sexy neo-soul/g-funk sound and some gospel influences. My music promotes resilience, faith, diligence, and self-mastery. I have a variety of musical influences from genres like G-Funk, Southern Rap/Hip-Hop, Neo Soul/R&B, all the way to Blues, Jazz, and Gospel.

I just recently released a single titled ‘God Did It’ that celebrates the goodness of the Lord in my life, allowing me to overcome adversity and trial and come out on the other side better than ever.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I believe the three most important qualities that carried me through to this point in my journey is my knowledge that anything worth having takes time, my knowledge that God will never put more on me than I can bear, and my strong standing confidence in the word I’ve heard spoken from the lord which is “So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen” (Matthew 20:16).

My advice to visionaries who are early in on their journey is to first submit your plans to God and build a solid foundation of self-love in order to motivate yourself when others are not able.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The Holy Bible has been the most beneficial book I’ve ever read. I will not lie and say I have always indulged in this practice, it took many tests and trials to shift my way of thinking to actually need the word of God.
